Roupov Castle and Its Striking Buildings
Northwest of Červené Poříčí Chateau lies the extensive ruin of the Gothic Roupov Castle. Its most striking surviving feature is a slender, octagonal chimney from the castle kitchen, dating from the 16th century. The core of the old castle stands on a rocky ridge above the village. Its hillside location and surviving architecture together shape the character of this historic site.
The ruins are freely accessible, except for the inhabited part. As access arrangements may depend on conditions on site, it is advisable to check them before your visit. The Chapel of Saint Anne is also part of the castle’s surroundings: it stands opposite the access path. Built in 1696, it replaced an older castle chapel. In the past, well-attended pilgrimages were held at the chapel every year in July.
Granary, Chapel and Local History
A massive, three-storey granary stands on sloping ground in front of the castle. A small masonry chapel is nearby. In a niche is an almost life-size Baroque stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. These buildings offer a glimpse of local life beyond the castle complex.
Wooden granaries have also been preserved at the former farmsteads numbered 21, 25, 31 and 44. Together with the large granary in front of the castle, they reveal different aspects of the village’s architectural history: alongside the imposing three-storey building are the preserved wooden granaries of the former farmsteads. Those interested in historic architecture will find more than a single building here, and the village’s heritage extends beyond the castle.

For a cycling trip, Route No. 2186 runs from Roupov via Dlouhá Louka, Lužany, Příchovice, Radkovice and Horšice to Měčín. It is rated easy, follows roads and has a stated duration of 92 minutes. Another local option is a public outdoor swimming pool. If you would like to include it in your plans, check its opening hours in advance. This lets you choose a hotel according to your own travel plans, rather than assuming a fixed itinerary for Roupov.
