Woods and trails on Štědrý

Vrčeň lies in a hollow surrounded by woods. Štědrý reaches an elevation of 668 metres and is considered the last foothill of the Brdy Mountains. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and cycling; two tourist routes with information boards lead through the wooded landscape around Štědrý. The landscape and ridge give a stay here a clear focus on the outdoors, while the town centre has its own buildings and monuments to explore.

The Naučná stezka Štědrý educational trail begins at Opatský Pond in Vrčeň and leads up to Štědrý. Seven stations with educational information structure the route. The Stezka svatého Vojtěcha begins at Vyšehrad, passes through the Štědrý forest and follows part of the green-marked hiking trail. It ends near the Baroque Chapel of Saint Adalbert and the Dobrá voda spring. Five information boards provide basic information about the saint, who is linked to Vrčeň in legend. The two trails also have different themes: educational stations on Štědrý contrast with information about the saint and his legendary connection to Vrčeň.

Chapel, church and local monuments

The Chapel of Saint Adalbert lies about 1.5 kilometres northeast of Vrčeň, on the slope of the Chlumec forest. It is north of road II/191 towards Rožmitál pod Třemšínem; a turn-off from the road, along the green-marked hiking route, leads to it. The chapel is an early Baroque octagonal central-plan building. Octagonal means that the building has eight sides. Historically, it was a destination for many pilgrims and a stopping place for processions.

The Church of Saint Lawrence occupies a prominent position above the town centre. Its single-nave building has a two-storey tower at the western end. The protected monument includes the church and the grounds of the former cemetery. Other valuable historic and artistic monuments in the town include the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk opposite the inn on the village square and the statue of the Virgin Mary near the fire station. In Vrčeň, you can encounter different forms of sacred architecture and local monuments, from the octagonal chapel to the church with its western tower.

Traditions and events

The Vojtěšská pouť is a long-standing tradition in Vrčeň. The New Year’s ascent of Štědrý is a traditional annual hiking trip. The Vrčeň Beer Festival held its third edition in July 2026 and offered tastings of various types of beer. At Vrčeňské šplouchání in June 2026, a variety of creatively made watercraft were used or presented. The Vrčeňská kuličkiáda is a recurring marble competition with four competition categories. The Memoriál Jana Chodory is also a recurring fire-sport competition; its 23rd edition took place in 2023. These traditions differ considerably in character, from a hiking trip to tastings, a marble competition and fire sports.
