The history of Velké Heraltice Castle spans from the end of the 13th century to the 19th century. There is also a medieval church, an organ dating from 1756 and a variety of nature-related attractions. During your stay, you can therefore choose your own focus, from cultural history to hiking plans and cycling.

Castle and church art

Velké Heraltice Castle has a complex building history spanning several centuries. It is one of the most significant castles in the Opava region. The castle complex also includes an orangery. These details give the castle a distinct role if you are considering Velké Heraltice primarily for its historic buildings.

The medieval church is dated to the second half of the 13th century or the course of the 14th century. Its crypt contains three wooden coffins holding priests who served there in the 18th century. This brings together different periods at one church site: its medieval construction and the priests’ later service.

The organ adds a more specific historical note. The organ builder J. S. Staudinger from Andělská Hora built it in 1756; it is considered the third-oldest organ in the region. Next to the church, in the cemetery by the perimeter wall, is the Bellegarde family crypt. It was probably built in the last third of the 19th century. It takes the form of a single-sided colonnade with five arches on columns with Doric capitals. In the church’s surroundings, architectural history, the history of the instrument and a later cemetery monument thus stand side by side.

Stream landscape and forest

The Heraltický potok locality is characterized by a meandering watercourse, oxbow lakes and wet meadows. It is home to the brook lamprey. Hůrky has a unique mixed forest of varying ages, dominated by the original Sudeten larch stand. The natural features offer different points of interest: the focus at Heraltický potok is on the watercourse and wet meadows, while at Hůrky it is on the composition of the forest. This can help you shape the nature-focused part of your stay around your interest in waterways or forests.

Hiking, cycling and getting around

East of Velké Heraltice, you can reach a yellow-marked hiking trail via Kamenec. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current access and route, as markings and access may change. The Radegast Opava cycling loop passes through Velké Heraltice and follows existing marked cycling routes. The two activities are therefore easy to distinguish: a yellow-marked hiking trail east of the village and a designated cycling loop through Velké Heraltice.

There is also a specific reference point for general road navigation: the road connecting Opava and Bruntál runs through Velké Heraltice. Road conditions and traffic can change, so check the latest conditions before travelling.
