On the southern edge of Kružberk, near the bridge over the Moravice, stands the Church of St. Peter and Paul. This small late Gothic church, built in a folk style, dates from the first half of the 14th century. A state-protected cultural monument, it is one of the oldest churches in Silesia. The organ also tells a long story: it dates from 1808 and is known for having the largest number of original components still preserved in Silesia.
Churches with Different Histories
The Church of St. Florian offers a different perspective on history. Master builder Antonín Englisch constructed it in 1812 on the site of a church approximately a hundred years older, which had already become too small. Inside, the Stations of the Cross, comprising 14 images from 1883, are among the surviving features. Together, the two churches offer different insights: St. Peter and Paul represents a late Gothic building and a remarkable historic organ, while St. Florian represents a new church built in the early 19th century and the Stations of the Cross image cycle.
Reservoir, Film History and Castle Site
The Kružberská přehrada is a water reservoir on the Moravice. It was built from 1948 to 1955 as the first reservoir in the Oder catchment area. Its cultural history is also connected with the area: in 1985, the reservoir and its surroundings served as filming locations for the nine-part television series Velké sedlo.
The ruins of Radisko-Kružberk Castle lie in a forest about 1.2 kilometres southwest of the town centre and approximately 400 metres east of the dam. The castle site stands on a prominent rocky ledge above the left bank of the Moravice. Historically, the castle served as a watch post overlooking a trade route; it probably fell into ruin during later internal unrest and the Hussite Wars. At Radisko, the focus is therefore both on its riverside location and on the uncertain historical record of its decline.
Cliffs, Nature Trail and Cycling Route
The Kružberské cvičné skály offer a distinct climbing experience: the walls, corners, cracks and chimneys have climbing routes up to 50 metres long. The area comprises three main sections: Žabí kůň, Hlavní masiv and Rozlámaná. From Kružberk, a red-marked hiking trail about one kilometre long leads towards the reservoir and the climbing rocks. Check the markings on site; before climbing, also check the conditions and that the protection is secure.
The Čermákova naučná stezka nature trail is 5.2 kilometres long and has eight stops covering nature, historic monuments and notable people from the region. It runs along the riverbanks, past the climbing rocks and the dam, and by an animal enclosure. When planning your walk, take the trail length and the topics covered at the stops into account; signs and trail conditions may change.
For a longer bike ride, cycling route Moravice No. 551 runs from Kružberk via Hradec nad Moravicí to Opava. It is approximately 44 kilometres long. Most of the route follows third-class roads and paved or unpaved forest tracks. As conditions and signs may change, check the current route before setting out.
Water and Landscape in the Wider Area
The Moravice is navigable by watercraft for approximately 100 kilometres, but only when water is being released from the Kružberská přehrada under controlled conditions. If you are planning a trip on the river, check the current water release and safety information before setting off. This condition is crucial to planning and makes the river experience different from the marked land routes.
The Moravice Nature Park is part of the wider regional landscape: there, below the Kružberská přehrada, the Moravice forms a deep canyon between Dolní Moravice and Branka u Opavy. This view beyond Kružberk adds a distinctly regional river landscape to the local highlights. This means a range of different options for planning a trip: the architectural history of the churches, the castle ruin’s location, the history of the reservoir, and climbing, hiking, cycling and water activities, each with their own conditions.
