Sudice brings together several themes for an exploratory trip: church architecture, border history, and cycling and hiking routes that pass through the town or start there. When planning your trip, it helps to choose your main focus first: Would you like to concentrate mainly on the churches and local history, include a festival, or explore the routes in the surrounding area?
Landscape and location
Sudice is located in the gently rolling agricultural landscape of the HluÄŤĂn Uplands. The terrain slopes down towards the valley of the OldĹ™išovskĂ˝ potok; the municipality lies at an elevation of 238 to 255 metres above sea level. The BĂlá voda stream also flows through Sudice. The uplands, valley and stream provide different points of reference for understanding the town’s landscape. They complement its cultural and historical themes with a look at the agricultural landscape in which Sudice is situated.
Churches and history
The Church of Saint John the Baptist complex was declared a cultural monument in 1990. The associated basilica is pseudogothic, has three naves and is built with a transept. It was constructed from red bricks and stone between 1904 and 1906. These terms describe its form: three naves divide the church interior, while the transept runs across the longitudinal section. The building period, materials and architecture thus offer concrete points of interest for anyone interested in sacred buildings.
Another church in Sudice is used by both the Evangelical and Orthodox communities. It was consecrated in 1909 and originally built as an Evangelical funeral chapel. Today, services of both denominations are held there. The two churches therefore stand out for different reasons: the basilica for its design, materials and heritage designation, and the Evangelical and Orthodox church for its former function and current use.
The town’s history also includes 28 March 1945: on that day, Sudice was the first liberated municipality in the Opava District. The memorial to the Czechoslovak tank crews was erected in 1960. It stands outside Sudice on the road to the Czech-Polish border. The churches and memorial therefore highlight different aspects of history, from religious architecture to the history of the border region.
SudickĂ˝ odpust
The SudickĂ˝ odpust takes place every year on the feast day of Saint John the Baptist. The two-day festival honours the patron saint of the municipality of Sudice. On Saturday, the programme includes music and a fireworks display. A wide selection of refreshments, including numerous homemade specialities, is also available; the specific food options may vary. As the festival dates change from year to year and the programme may also change, check the dates for the relevant year before travelling. If the festival is the reason for your stay, checking the dates is a useful step in your planning.
Cycling and hiking
Cycling Route 6055 runs from Třebom via Sudice, Rohov and Strahovice through the Chuchelenský les towards Albertovec and on to Kravaře. Sudice is therefore directly on the route described. The 8.0-kilometre Cycling Route 6153 starts at the Kietrz/Třebom border crossing, runs via Třebom and connects there to Cycling Route 6055 towards Sudice. It then continues to the border crossing in the direction of Racibórz. When choosing a route, you can compare two different itineraries: Route 6055, which passes through Sudice, and Route 6153, with its described border route and connection at Třebom.
A blue-marked hiking route also starts in Sudice and leads to HluÄŤĂn. It runs via Rohov, Strahovice and Chuchelná, through the Chuchelna and BÄ›lá forests, and past remains of the border fortifications. The route continues to a reconstructed, publicly accessible fortress in the Czechoslovak fortification complex. Cycling and hiking routes thus offer different ways to connect Sudice with other named places and the history of the border region.
