Darkovice combines cultural and historical themes with specific routes through the town. When planning your trip, it is important to distinguish between an occasion and a route: the MO-S 20 Orel fortification is exceptionally opened to the public during the annual commemorative event held in May. A blue-marked hiking trail and international cycle route No. 5 are specific route options through Darkovice. Other points of interest include St. Hedwig’s Church and the Na Hrázi sports and recreation area.
Military history in a surviving structure
The substantial Czechoslovak fortification MO-S 20 Orel is the only structure built as part of the planned “U Orla” fortress. It has been preserved in its 1945 condition. The historical focus is therefore on a single completed structure within a planned fortress project. Public access is tied to the annual commemorative event held in May: the structure is exceptionally opened to the public during the event. If you would like to plan a visit, time your trip to coincide with the event and check the date in advance.
St. Hedwig’s Church and a historic monument
St. Hedwig’s Church was consecrated on 3 July 2005. On 25 March 2010, it received a new organ. The organ was built by the Kánský-Brachtl organ workshop in Krásné Loučky near Krnov and was solemnly blessed. Another historic landmark in Darkovice is a structure built in 1823 to commemorate the abolition of compulsory labour in Prussia. The two dates mark different chapters in the town’s history: the remembrance of a 19th-century political event and the more recent history of the church.
Hiking trail, cycle route and views
A blue-marked hiking trail runs through Darkovice along the route Poruba-Slovan – Děhylov – Hlučín – Darkovičky – Darkovice – Bohuslavice. Check the current trail markings on site if you plan to use this route.
International cycle route No. 5, Jantarová stezka, runs through Darkovice along road III/4698. This provides a specific road designation for route planning. Markings and road conditions may change; check them before setting off.
From Darkovice’s highest points near Orel Fortress, the view stretches northeast to Poland. The panorama adds a scenic element alongside the historical themes and routes through the town.
Recreation and events
The Na Hrázi sports and recreation area has a natural swimming pool with a pool and a children’s paddling pool, a children’s area and two beach volleyball courts. It complements the cultural and historical attractions and routes with a dedicated focus on recreation and sport.
Dožínky (the harvest festival) is also one of Darkovice’s traditional events. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates in advance. This allows you to consider attending a traditional event separately from visiting the fortification, which is open to the public only during the annual commemorative event in May.
