Háj Ve Slezsku offers several ways to enjoy a stay focused on culture and landscape: a fortification with an educational trail, churches with their own architectural histories, monuments, and a hill with a viewpoint. When planning, it helps to consider these themes separately and decide whether architecture, remembrance, or landscape should be the main focus. The historical dates and specific features give each place its own distinct character.

Smolkovská tvrz and the Educational Trail

Smolkovská tvrz on Padařov Hill was built between 1936 and 1938 as part of a belt of fortifications. It consists of five underground structures connected to one another. An educational trail runs around these structures. The fortification’s historical context and its distinctive layout of several interconnected buildings therefore belong to the same theme. Its place within a belt of fortifications also provides a broader context, while the five structures identify the specific components of the site.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of St. Valentine was built in 1911 and has retained its artistic character. It was declared a cultural monument in May 2015. The year it was built and its heritage protection are different points of reference: one dates the building, while the other marks its later designation. For travelers interested in architecture, the church offers both a specific historical connection and a distinctive artistic character.

The Neo-Gothic Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built by local settlers in 1877. Its construction date and Neo-Gothic designation offer a different perspective from that of St. Valentine: here, the focus is on the style and the local builders. Neo-Gothic refers to the later revival of Gothic design forms. Considered together, the two ecclesiastical buildings differ in the aspects highlighted by their history: one is noted for its preserved artistic character and heritage status, the other for its Neo-Gothic classification and construction by local settlers.

Monuments and Remembrance

The Silesian Scouting Memorial (Památník slezského skautingu) was erected starting in 1971 in response to the ban on the Junák movement. This event is directly connected to the story of its creation. Different details are central to the Vladislav Vančura Monument: it was erected in 1972 on the main road in the western part of Háj Ve Slezsku. The original bust, a work by sculptor Karel Vašut, was stolen in 2002 and replaced with a copy. Thus, the historical circumstances shape the context of the scouting memorial, while the date, location, and history of the bust shape that of the Vančura monument.

Ostrá hůrka: Views and Regional Significance

Ostrá hůrka is 315 meters high, belongs to Chabičov, and is considered an important site of the Silesian National Revival. On the hill, a north-facing viewpoint offers views of Háj Ve Slezsku and other communities in Silesia. Its historical significance and landscape views are two distinct reasons to include the hill in your travel plans. If taking in the surrounding scenery is important to you, the viewpoint offers a clear orientation; its historical context provides another way to discover Ostrá hůrka.

A Place to Rest by the Mohyla

Next to the Mohyla slezských skautů, there are two benches where you can rest after the climb. Their condition may change, so check on site whether they are available for use.
