Slate offers a distinctive way into the history of Budišov Nad Budišovkou: the Muzeum břidlice brings together a protected mill building, the town’s more than 700-year history and the working of a rock characteristic of the region. A Baroque bridge, a viewpoint overlooking several mountain ranges and a disc golf course add further interests to the cultural trail for your stay.

Slate and Mining History

The Muzeum břidlice is housed in a former mill dating from the first half of the 18th century, now among the town’s protected buildings. The museum explores the more than 700-year history of Budišov Nad Budišovkou, as well as the formation, processing and uses of slate. A visit thus links the town’s history with a rock that is characteristic of the region.

Exhibits include unique wooden mining carts; exhibitions may be updated over time. In the small slate-splitting workshop, visitors can try splitting a slate heart. As opportunities to take part may change, it is advisable to check before your visit.

The Naučná břidlicová stezka educational trail starts right next to the museum and documents the region’s mines. The museum and the trail offer different perspectives: the museum focuses on the town’s long history and slate, while the trail explores regional mining.

The Bridge and Historical Traces

The Kamenný most is a two-arched Baroque stone bridge built from rubble stone. Its parapet is entirely masonry, and the bridge was built in 1773. On the parapet above the central pier stands a sandstone sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk, added later and dating from 1725. The dates highlight the difference between the bridge and the older sculpture installed at a later date.

Another historical trace can be found nearby: the first reliable written mention of the Vildštejn castle ruins dates from 1316. This makes 1316 the date of the mention, not necessarily the year the ruins were built. Those interested in historic sites will find another regional point of interest here, alongside the museum and bridge.

Views and Activities

From Rozhledna Halaška, views extend over the Jeseníky Mountains, the Beskids, the Oderské vrchy, the Kružberk Reservoir, Červená hora near Libavá and the White Carpathians. Access information was last updated in March 2023: Rozhledna Halaška can be reached on foot; no road leads to it. Check the latest access information before your visit.

For an active pastime, there is an 18-hole disc golf course with competition-standard features in the nearby Budišov forest park. Visitors can borrow discs from the Autokemp or the Středisko volného času; playing is free. As borrowing arrangements may change, check in advance where to collect the discs if you plan to play with borrowed ones.

The Budišovka River also flows through Budišov Nad Budišovkou and is part of the town’s geography. To choose what to focus on, consider the options: the museum and adjoining educational trail explore slate and mining; the bridge and ruins offer historical traces; Rozhledna Halaška is all about far-reaching views; and the disc golf course offers a chance to get active.
