Opava offers various ways to explore its culture and urban history: A walk through the center takes you past buildings from several eras and through attractive parks. There is also an exhibition about Silesia, a literary memorial and a trail that puts trees in the spotlight. This allows you to shape your stay around the topics that interest you most.
City Center and Brick Gothic
A walk through the city center takes you past buildings in Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles, through historic corners and attractive parks. Almost all of Opava’s main sights are within walking distance—a useful guide when planning your routes through the city.
One prominent landmark is the Co-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is Opava’s largest church building and a landmark of the Upper Square, Horní náměstí. It is also one of the most significant monuments illustrating characteristic features of Silesian Brick Gothic. It has been listed as a national cultural monument since 1995. A visit to the co-cathedral thus adds a specific example of regionally distinctive architecture to a general city walk.
The town hall, with its distinctive tower, is now known as Hláska. It is regarded as one of Opava’s best-known symbols and a prominent landmark. Müllerův dům offers a different historical connection: The building was constructed in 1726 and originally formed part of the grounds of a Liechtenstein castle that has since disappeared. Its construction date and connection to the former castle grounds give the house its own place in the city’s history.
Silesian Topics at the Museum
The Expozice Slezsko exhibition presents the nature, history, culture and personalities of Silesia in four sections. Its thematic scope therefore ranges from landscapes and ways of life to historical developments and influential figures. The exhibition’s layout may change over time. The Silesian Museum also has a special historical connection: It traces its origins to the first public museum in what is now the Czech Republic. The exhibition and the museum’s history thus offer two different perspectives on the region—its themes and the history of the museum itself.
Trees in the City Center
If you would like to include plant life in your stay as well as architecture, the Dendrological Trail runs through the park belt in the city center. The walking trail shares information about notable trees. Its focus differs from the architectural stops on the city walk: Here, the trees and their significance take center stage. The trail is an established tourist and educational attraction in Opava.
A Literary Memorial
The Petr Bezruč Memorial was established during the poet Petr Bezruč’s lifetime and stands at the site of his birthplace. Its specific connection to his birthplace links the memorial to the poet’s biography. For travelers interested in literature as well as urban architecture and regional history, this place adds a personal, biographical perspective to Opava’s cultural offerings.
A Beer Route with a May Date
Another way to discover Opava is the Opavská dvanáctka. The route leads through the city and offers the opportunity to sample beers from smaller breweries. The event is scheduled for May; check the date before your trip. This makes it easy to include the event in your travel plans, while architecture, museum topics, literary history and the tree trail offer other clearly distinct points of interest.
