Gently rolling terrain, views of the Beskydy and Jeseníky Mountains, and a Baroque church give Štěpánkovice several clear points of interest for a stay. The surrounding area offers opportunities for active cycling; local history, culture and sports also provide a range of themes for planning your trip. You can therefore focus on the landscape, architectural history or a specific sporting or cultural activity.
Landscape and active time outdoors
Štěpánkovice lies in the Hlučín Hills, in the northern foothills of the last spurs of the Nízký Jeseník range. The landscape is gently rolling. From elevated spots around the village, you can see the Beskydy and Jeseníky Mountains. The surrounding terrain is suitable for active cycling. Cycling and taking in the views are different ways to experience the landscape: one focuses on moving through the terrain, the other on the views from elevated spots.
There are also specific sports facilities in the village. The public sports complex on the school grounds includes tennis, nohejbal and volleyball courts, a football pitch, beach volleyball, a practice tennis wall, facilities for firefighting sports and a running track. Sports equipment is also available to rent there. Alongside cycling in the surrounding area, visitors can choose from several named sports facilities at one public complex.
Church of St Catherine and local history
The Church of St Catherine is a single-nave Baroque building with a three-sided apse. It was built in 1756 on the site of an earlier wooden structure. Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the patron saint of the church and parish. “Single-nave” describes a church building with one nave; the presbytery is the liturgical choir area. The church’s architectural form and religious significance to Štěpánkovice can both be understood in this context.
Successful ethnographic ensembles are part of the village’s cultural history; there was also amateur theatre in the village in the past. The Gardeners’ Association holds well-attended fruit, vegetable and flower exhibitions, accompanied by a harvest thanksgiving mass. Bringing an exhibition and a mass together connects community life with harvest traditions and offers a cultural point of interest distinct from the church’s architectural history.
Albertovec is also part of the municipality of Štěpánkovice. A stud farm began operating there in 1952.
Events, dining and getting there
Den Obce Štěpánkovice is a traditional event for all age groups, with an extensive cultural and sports programme. If you want to plan your trip around a specific date, check the event date in advance. This helps distinguish a scheduled event from the landscape and cultural attractions described as available year-round.
For dining, Štěpánkovice has the Na Statku restaurant. If you would like to eat there, it is worth checking the current opening hours. There are very good train and bus connections to Opava; check the current timetable for your travel dates. This lets you take local amenities and connections to Opava into account when planning, without limiting your trip to a single activity.
