Discover museums and village history
The historical tour at the Kitzbühel Museum takes visitors from Copper Age mining in the Late Bronze Age through the town’s development and the heyday of modern-era mining and Baroque culture, all the way to sporting history, including the Kitzbühel ski team that made its mark in the 1950s. This sequence makes a visit to the museum an encounter with very different chapters of the town’s history. Across 250 m², the museum displays selected major works, autographs, photographs and designs by Alfons Walde, who worked as a painter, architect, graphic artist and publisher. A lift provides barrier-free access to the entire museum.
The St. Johann in Tirol Museum offers a different perspective: It is located in two underground buildings connected to each other, which served as a correctional institution for sinful priests in the 18th century. One exhibition focuses on the Kaiser Mountains; audio tours on smartphones are available in three languages. As program details may change, check the current language selection before your visit.
History on trails and themed paths
History can also be discovered on foot. The Schwendt village loop passes through the historic village centre and takes a detour to the Hackerkreuz and the lookout cross dating from 1652. This puts a walk through the village and two specific historical landmarks at the heart of the experience—a different way to explore the past than in a museum.
For the Streif Summer Experience, the Hahnenkamm cable car provides access; the circular hike starts at the Streif start house. The Triassic Park is located on the Steinplatte in Waidring, at an altitude of around 1,600 metres. It explores dinosaurs, the prehistoric ocean and times long past. The Triassic Trail around the mountain station is a family-friendly circular hiking trail featuring numerous life-size dinosaur models. The two experiences offer different highlights: one is a circular hike starting at the Streif start house; the other combines exercise with prehistoric models along a themed trail.
Family experiences and wildlife
Timok’s Wild World, a family park with numerous attractions for all ages, is located at the Streuböden mid-station in Fieberbrunn. The F1 Streuböden cable car takes visitors there; alternatively, hiking trail no. 8 leads from the valley station to the mid-station. The cable car operates seasonally. Check operating times for your travel dates before your visit.
The Aurach Wildlife Park is home to 350 animals, including red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, lynx and yaks. Wild animals are fed daily at 2:30 pm; seasonal safety exceptions may apply. The park offers both a variety of animal species and a specific time visitors can plan their visit around.
Mountain lifts, alpine flowers and winter sports
The Pillersee cable car takes visitors to the summit, where the Jakobskreuz stands. Operating times are seasonal; check the relevant dates before your visit. The Alpine Flower Garden on the Kitzbüheler Horn features 400 varieties of alpine flowers. For winter sports, the Kitzbühel ski area connects Kitzbühel, Reith, Aurach and Jochberg, with 233 kilometres of pistes and 58 lift facilities. The ski area on the Kitzbüheler Horn has 11 pistes.
Long-distance routes and regional offers
The KAT-BIKE-LIGHT tour runs through the valleys of the Kitzbühel Alps, covers a stated distance of 226 km and offers views of the Hohe Salve, Brixental, St. Johann in Tirol and Pillerseetal regions. As route details may change, check the current route before setting out. The options differ considerably in scale, from a village loop through a historic centre to this long bike tour. You can first decide whether you would like to explore individual places on foot or take on a longer route.
The PillerseeTal Family Moments All-Inclusive Card is valid for numerous offers in Fieberbrunn, Hochfilzen, St. Jakob in Haus, St. Ulrich am Pillersee and Waidring.
