The Stoana Mascht granite column was erected in 1484 and has stood in the village square of Oberndorf in Tirol since 1977. Its construction date and the history of its location refer to different points in time. Alongside such memorial sites, mining history and historic churches shape the cultural side of the village; hiking, cycling and other activities add various ways to enjoy your stay.

Traces of Mining and Local History

The Alfons Walde memorial stone commemorates the former vicarage of Oberndorf. The painter and architect Alfons Walde was born there on February 8, 1891. The Josef Hager monument stands at the village inn and commemorates Josef Hager, a freedom fighter from Oberndorf. With a cherry tree, a wooden bench and a central bronze fountain, Knappenplatz commemorates Oberndorf’s mining history.

The Rerobichl mining educational trail leads through a small section of Oberndorf’s former copper and silver mining area. The mining chapel on Rerobichl, also known as Rerobichl Chapel, was built in 1732 in honor of Saint John of Nepomuk. Its interior features stucco work by Jakob Singer and frescoes by Simon Benedikt Faistenberger; the chapel also serves as a reminder of the mining industry’s former heyday.

Churches and Architectural History

The parish church of Saints Philip and James in Oberndorf was first mentioned in 1422 and rebuilt in 1733/34. It is a Baroque hall church with a three-bay nave followed by a single-bay choir. A bay is a section of the spatial layout.

Hiking, Cycling and Other Activities

For route planning, two specific options provide a point of reference: the Bichlach circuit starts and ends in Oberndorf in Tirol, while the Alfons Walde walking tour takes about an hour. The hiking landscape includes the KitzbĂĽheler Horn on one side and the gentle hills of Bichlach on the other. The Kaiser cycling route passes through Oberndorf.

The OD Trails comprise four mountain bike routes: Green, Blue, Red and Black Line. Trail features include two hairpin-turn trails, steep sections, a steep descent and a practice trail. The Oberndorf natural toboggan run is lit daily until 11:00 p.m.

Bichlachbad has a 25-meter sports pool. Yappy’s Puzzle Trail is a mining adventure for families in Oberndorf and starts at the playground by Bichlachbad.

Getting Here and Finding Your Way

If you travel by public transport, Postbus routes 800 and 810 connect St. Johann in Tirol station with the Oberndorf i. T. Ort stop. The Giselabahn, served by train route 201, stops at Oberndorf i. T. station. Check current connections before departure, as timetables may change.

The Oberndorf in Tirol Tourist Information Office is in the center, between the church and Raiffeisenbank. It is accessible without barriers and has a customer car park. Its location between the two landmarks places it in the village center.
