Westendorf combines trails through meadows and hamlets with a long church history and seasonal mountain experiences. The time of year is important when planning: some high-altitude attractions depend on lift operations, and you should check the current condition of the cross-country ski trails for your travel dates.
Hiking trails with different starting points
The Westendorf circular hiking trail is a panoramic route through meadows and forests. It passes old farmhouses, goes through several hamlets and leads to sights such as chapels, bread ovens and fountains. The route thus connects the landscape with architectural landmarks along the way. It is also suitable for Nordic walking and running.
The WohlfĂĽhlweg starts at the Westendorf Tourist Office, follows Schulgasse and leads along a farm track to the district of Bichling. The Brechhorn Tour starts elsewhere: at the Alpenrosenbahn mountain station. If you plan this tour or a start at the mountain station, check seasonal lift operations.
St. Nicholas Church: a history in several stages
St. Nicholas Church in Westendorf is first mentioned in documents in 1320. The Gothic church was renovated by Andre Huber in 1771. Some of the frescoes that have survived to this day date from 1774 and were created by the painter Matthias Kirchner. The three dates mark different milestones: the first mention, the renovation and the creation of the surviving frescoes.
Talkaser and Alpinolino
The Alpenrosenbahn I & II 6-seater gondola takes visitors directly to Talkaser at 1,770 m; lift operations may vary by season. The Alpinolino adventure world is located at Talkaser. It includes the “Tierische Rätseltour” (Animal Riddle Trail), “Spoggolino-Ballbahn” (Spoggolino Ball Run) and “Holzwurmweg” (Woodworm Trail).
From the Alpinorama viewpoint, the panoramic view extends across the Brixental Valley to the Hohe Tauern mountains. Access to this high-altitude attraction depends on seasonal lift operations. The Alpinolino Woodworm Trail leads from the Alpenrosenbahn mid-station past numerous mountain inns to the valley station in Westendorf. This connects several points along the lift route with a specifically described trail.
Winter activities and options in the Windautal valley
From December to April, Westendorf provides direct access to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental and the KitzSki region. Since operating dates can change, check them for your travel dates. Westendorf has 13 km of groomed cross-country ski trails and winter hiking trails, including the route to Salvensee lake. Check separately whether the trails are currently groomed.
There is a natural toboggan run in the Windautal valley; snow conditions and operations may vary. Depending on the season, activities there include hiking, cycling and mountain biking, as well as winter hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring in winter. This selection differs from the high-altitude attractions around Talkaser and Alpinorama: the Windautal valley offers several summer and winter activities, while access to the viewpoint depends on seasonal lift operations.
You can therefore organize your trip by season and starting point: trails through hamlets and to sights sit alongside routes that start at a lift station; in winter, cross-country ski trails, winter hiking trails and the natural toboggan run are added. For destinations involving lifts, check operations, and for winter activities, check the relevant conditions for your travel dates.
