The Bell Experience Trail offers a tour of about one hour, ending in Waidring’s historic town centre. At Steinplatte, seasonal winter activities and viewpoints take centre stage, alongside the parish church and its architectural and fresco history. These themes give the town a range of distinct highlights: craftsmanship and local history, winter activities, and views of Steinplatte and the Pillersee Valley.
Bell History on the Experience Trail
The “Glockenwelt” exhibition is housed in the BIATRON at the car park of the Waidring/Steinplatte cable cars and serves as the starting point for the Bell Experience Trail. At the stations, visitors learn about the history of bell casting, the distinctive features of Waidring’s bell foundries and local anecdotes. The tour explores several aspects of the town’s bell-making craft before ending in the historic town centre.
The historic bell founder’s house on the Bell Experience Trail is associated with the casting of the first Lugmair bell. This specific connection adds a named house and a particular bell to the topics covered at the stations. The approximate duration of one hour also gives you an idea of how much time to allow for this local exploration.
Parish Church and Cemetery
The present-day parish church was built in 1757 by Kassian Singer and Andrä Hueber. The Bishop of Chiemsee consecrated it on 15 August 1764. Most of the frescoes in the late Baroque church interior were created in 1761 by Johann Perwanger and Matthias Mader. The sequence of construction, frescoes and consecration makes the church’s history tangible through three specific dates.
The cemetery completely surrounds the parish church; traditionally, only wrought-iron crosses are found there. This brings together a late Baroque church interior and a cemetery with a clearly defined tradition. For a cultural highlight in Waidring, the church offers not only its architectural history, but also its frescoes and the surrounding cemetery as distinct points of interest.
Winter Activities on Steinplatte
The Steinplatte Waidring ski area offers mainly easy pistes, a Dino Run and Triassic Park. It is particularly suitable for families with children. Winter activities also include the dinosaur-themed Triassic Funline and a free winter playground at Triassic Park. Flexible childcare that can be booked separately is also available.
Those interested in activities away from the pistes can find a winter hiking trail with a stalactite cave and viewing platform. In Waidring’s town centre, the “Triassic Kinderland” is located in the Hausberg Arena: a dedicated beginners’ area with a wave track and practice lifts. This distinction makes the area’s focus clear. Some winter activities may vary by season, so check which ones are available during your travel dates before planning.
Views and Longer Tours
Triassic Park is located on Steinplatte in Waidring in the Pillersee Valley and is easily reached from Waidring by gondola; there is no need for a long hike. The panoramic platform on Steinplatte is shaped like a fan coral and offers views down into the depths and far into the distance. Separate from this is the viewing platform on the Triassic Trail, which looks out over the surrounding mountains of Steinplatte and the Pillersee Valley.
For a longer route, the Waidring–Reit im Winkl Borderland Tour is another option. It is 47 kilometres long and runs over asphalt, gravel and forest roads. The route and surfaces make this tour a different proposition to plan for than the Bell Experience Trail, which takes about an hour. As route conditions can change, check them in advance. Access to Triassic Park may also depend on operations, so check whether the gondola is running before your visit.
