Murau Castle has undergone a long transformation: a castle built in the 13th century became a Renaissance palace, constructed between 1628 and 1643. The castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Check the seasonal tour schedule before your trip.
Crafts, Wood and Monastery Art
At the Murau Handicrafts Museum, you can explore different aspects of the town’s history and everyday life. The ground floor is devoted to crafts, while the first floor covers early history, town history and trade. The attic focuses on domestic and agricultural life, as well as firefighting at home. The exhibits spread across the floors make for a varied journey of discovery.
Another way to experience regional culture is at the Wood Museum in St. Ruprecht ob Murau. This site, covering more than 10,000 m², offers insights into wood, forests and forgotten subjects; the museum also provides a family experience centred on wood as a raw material. As a visitor and information centre, it is a key stop on the Wood World tours and a starting point for many tours throughout the Murau district. The focus here is on both wood and finding your way to other tours.
At the Abbey Museum in St. Lambrecht, exhibits offer a glimpse into almost every period since the monastery was founded. On display are Romanesque and Gothic furnishings from various churches, as well as Baroque statues and paintings. Those interested in architectural and art history can explore different periods and forms of ecclesiastical furnishings.
Murau’s Town History and Beer Culture
In Murau, two other perspectives lead to historic sites and figures: the audio-guided town tour passes through the historic townscape and follows in the footsteps of the Liechtenstein and Schwarzenberg families. The town walk takes you to historic places in Murau’s old town and follows in the footsteps of the Minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein, Anna Neumann and the House of Schwarzenberg. One tour focuses on the townscape and its families, while the other highlights historic places and additional historical figures.
Beer culture is also part of what you can discover in Murau. The Beer Pharmacy is located in what records describe as the oldest building in the beer town. The Brewery of the Senses offers a multisensory experience lasting just under two hours, with audiovisual stations and stations for smell and hearing. The tour includes a tasting of various Murau beer specialities. Check the tour packages before your trip.
Outdoor Experiences and Active Days
The Via Natura trail leads through the quiet forests, gentle alpine pastures, clear streams and impressive peaks of the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park. Another striking natural attraction is GĂĽnster Waterfall, which is designated a natural monument. Frauenalpe is a year-round local recreation area and the local mountain of Murau. Together, these destinations offer different landscapes and nature experiences without prescribing the same kind of outing.
At the foot of the Grebenzen, Lake Auerling lies at an altitude of 1,315 metres. Its tranquil waters are ideal for swimming; swimming conditions may vary by season. The Murau region offers cycling, mountain biking and gravel biking. The section of the Murradweg cycle route through the region is about 45 kilometres long. The Murtalbahn is a bicycle train, allowing you to cover sections of the Murradweg by train. Check operating conditions before travelling.
The region has five railway stations: in Murau, Neumarkt in der Steiermark, Mariahof, Scheifling and Predlitz. The connection that suits your stay depends on your starting point and destination, so check the connections for your trip.
A Region to Discover in Winter Too
The Kreischberg ski area offers 42 kilometres of pistes and 13 cable cars and lifts. As infrastructure figures can change, check the latest information for your trip. This makes it easy to choose between town history, nature, cycling and winter sports based on your interests.
