In Krakaudorf, church traditions and distinctive cultural sites meet paths leading to a variety of destinations: one circular route goes around the swimming lake, while other routes lead to Calvary Hill, the Rantenbach stream or in the direction of Dorferalm. If you are planning a stay, you can first decide whether to focus on an annual festival, a particular cultural site or a tour through the landscape. This makes it easy to choose local highlights without trying to fit every path and attraction into a single itinerary.

Church traditions and special dates

Krakaudorf Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Oswald. Its church consecration festival is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in August; in Krakaudorf, the festival is known as “Oswaldi” or Oswaldi Sunday. Another recurring tradition is the Faschingrennen, one of the oldest customs in the Krakau region, which takes place in Krakaudorf every odd-numbered year. If you are planning a trip around one of these dates, check the event date for your chosen year.

The Samson procession is also associated with an impressive, precisely described figure: it is almost 6 m tall, weighs 75 kg and is carried by a man.

Chapels, woodcarving and a museum

Northeast of Krakaudorf, the Calvary Chapel stands on a hilltop. Inside is a life-size, boldly rendered Calvary crucifixion group. This folk carving dates from around 1700. Focusing on the depiction itself sets this cultural site apart from the church festival dates: here, the emphasis is on a single work of art and its craftsmanship.

The path to the chapel is also marked by religious art. Four small wooden chapels stand along the route, serving as Stations of the Cross and containing distinctive carved groups. Those interested in sacred art can appreciate the crucifixion group in the chapel and the carvings in the stations as different forms of sculpture. Part 2 of the Krakau Village Circular Trail leads to Calvary Hill and back to Krakaudorf.

The Edelsteingarten Mineral Museum in Krakaudorf offers a different kind of collection. Classified as a natural history and natural sciences museum, it displays 40 precious gemstones from around the world. This provides a clear contrast with the religious cultural sites: rather than Stations of the Cross and woodcarving, the focus here is on minerals and their diversity.

The Garden of the Elements is a separate attraction. Its facilities include a small Kneipp facility with a foot reflexology trail and an herb spiral with a variety of herbs. These two places therefore offer different highlights: gemstones are at the heart of the mineral museum, while the Kneipp facility and herbs are the focus in the Garden of the Elements.

Routes between the lake, stream and panoramic viewpoints

For a waterside walk, the Krakaudorf Swimming Lake route starts at the municipal office and loops around the lake. The swimming lake offers a refreshing way to cool off in summer. The combination of a marked circular route and a seasonal opportunity to swim makes this a distinct option for the warmer months; it differs from paths whose destination or course is more strongly defined by a stream or landscape feature.

The NW-8 Rantenbach Loop leads to the Rantenbach stream and back to Krakaudorf. Along the way, it crosses the Krakau region’s meadows and fields and follows the Rantenbach. The Schaflechner Route has a different focus: it is a Nordic walking tour in the direction of Dorferalm. There are more viewpoints as the route climbs higher. If you want to compare routes, these descriptions offer two distinct options: the Rantenbach Loop is characterized by the stream and the meadows and fields, while the Schaflechner Route leads towards Dorferalm and offers viewpoints along the ascent.

The Krakautal Circular Hiking Trail leads from Krakaudorf to Krakauschatten and back. Parking for this hiking trail is available in Krakaudorf by the church. The Krakaudorf Swimming Lake route, the Rantenbach Loop, the Schaflechner Route and the Krakautal Circular Hiking Trail therefore differ in their stated destinations and trail features. To choose between them, look closely at these details: a loop around the lake, a return to Krakaudorf, a route towards Dorferalm or a connection to Krakauschatten.
