St. Peter am Kammersberg can be explored through a wide range of activities: the Hemma Pilgrimage Route passes through the village, while trails on Mount Greim, themed hiking trails and historic religious buildings each offer a different focus. When planning, the time of year and the time required are also important. Hiking the pilgrimage route, following a themed trail and taking a carriage ride are different ways to experience the landscape and local history.

Exploring on foot: the Hemma Route, Mount Greim and themed trails

The Hemma Pilgrimage Route passes through St. Peter am Kammersberg and then continues to Stolzalpe. The hike along this route from Winklern to St. Peter am Kammersberg takes just under three hours. In summer, hikes to the summit are available on Mount Greim, a 2,474-metre-high mountain in the southern Wölzer Tauern. In winter, winter sports are practised there. Summer summit hikes and winter sports give Mount Greim two distinct seasonal focuses.

The Katschtal Cycle Path connects the valley villages of St. Peter am Kammersberg and Schöder. It also provides access to mountain bike tours at the foot of Mount Greim. Alongside the walking pilgrimage route, there is therefore a cycle link between the valley villages and access to mountain bike tours. Which option interests you depends, among other things, on whether you are planning a hike, a cycling trip or a seasonal stay in the mountains.

The Eselsberg Alpine Experience Trail near Oberwölz is especially suitable for families with children. At seven stations, it teaches visitors about alpine farming in the past and today, as well as local fauna and flora. Traditionally run alpine huts with playgrounds are located near the trail. The route thus combines topics related to the alpine landscape with discovery stations; the huts and playgrounds are in the surrounding area.

The “Tierisch Wild” Experience Hiking Trail has a different focus: it features life-size images of native wild animals and provides information about them. Public parking is available directly at the main square in St. Peter am Kammersberg. The themed trail focuses on native wildlife, while the Alpine Experience Trail incorporates alpine farming and plant life into its stations.

Churches and architectural history

The parish church of St. Peter am Kammersberg was built in 1072 and features Romanesque and Gothic elements. The charnel house at the parish church contains frescoes depicting the Procession of the Three Kings and the Last Judgement. The building’s history and its imagery offer two different reasons to visit: the church’s architectural features and the scenes depicted in the charnel house.

Althofen also has a long church history: a church is believed to have stood there as early as around the year 1000. The branch church in Althofen is dedicated to St. Bartholomew and stands in a walled churchyard. Feistritz Castle adds a different type of building to the area’s architectural history. The late-medieval fortified building was converted into a castle in the 16th century. Guided tours were held there during the summer months. If you are planning a visit, check in advance for current tour dates.

Studio and carriage ride

The Hans and Marga Leitner studio displays sculptures and wooden objects by the Leitner family. Visits were possible by prior arrangement by phone. If you would like to visit the studio, call ahead to ask whether an appointment is possible.

Pferdeschlitten- & Kutschenfahrten Putzenbacher offers carriage rides through the countryside around St. Peter am Kammersberg. A ride takes about two hours in total. The service requires an appointment; opening hours may vary. For comparison, the hike from Winklern to St. Peter takes just under three hours, while a carriage ride takes about two. These timings relate to different activities but give a specific indication of how long each takes.
