Explore Stadl an der Mur through a range of interests: the parish church and Goppelsbach Castle reflect the town’s history and architecture, while the Griessner Stadl is a historic timber structure with cultural significance. For active days, there is also the Mur Cycle Path, a circular hike and organised rafting tours on the Mur. You can shape your trip around architecture and history, or focus more on trails and water activities.

Culture and Architectural History

The parish church of Stadl an der Mur is dedicated to St John the Baptist; the parish celebrates its patronal feast on 24 June. The church stands at exactly 914 metres above sea level on a northern slope that forms the boundary of the town and valley. The route to the parish church is illuminated at night. If you plan to visit in the evening, check the lighting in advance.

The Griessner Stadl is the venue for events organised by the Stadl-Predlitz Art Association. The historic barn was built using traditional woodworking techniques in 1767; in 2015, it was planned as a multifunctional event space. Goppelsbach Castle offers a different architectural feature: the Renaissance building has three storeys and a hipped roof. Seifried von MoĂźheim had it rebuilt between 1587 and 1595.

Mur Bridge, Trails and Water Activities

Stadl an der Mur lies directly on the Mur and the Mur Cycle Path. The Mur Bridge is a 44.5-metre-long bridge made of laminated larch timber, built in preparation for the 1995 “Holzzeit” provincial exhibition. It is for cycle and pedestrian traffic.

The circular hike starts at the village square or at Gasthof Ortner in Stadl an der Mur. It follows the Mur Cycle Path to Goppelsbach Castle, then continues through a short stretch of forest and along hiking trail No. 8 to the vlg. Hiasbauer property. The two named starting points and the sequence of trail sections help you assess this hike as a separate option.

The Badesee Stadl an der Mur leisure complex is located on the southern edge of Stadl/Mur. For children, the “ICE Tower” and “FREEFALL Slide” are particular attractions. These two specifically named, child-focused activities can help you plan your leisure time.

You can join an organised rafting tour on the Mur from Stadl an der Mur. Dates and availability may vary by season and provider, so check them before making the activity a firm part of your plans.

More Tours and Travel

As a regional option, the Hoher Steg via ferrata is not within Stadl an der Mur itself, but in the wider municipal area of Stadl-Predlitz. It is located in the Turrach Gorge at the entrance to the Turracher Valley; its sections extend over 400 metres and are graded A to C. By comparison, the circular hike has two possible starting points and a specified route, while the via ferrata has a stated length and grades from A to C. The options also differ in location: the hike starts in Stadl an der Mur, while the via ferrata is in the wider municipal area.

For rail travel, Stadl an der Mur station is a smaller stop where passengers can board and alight. Check the connection for your travel date if you are considering taking the train.
