The Scheiflinger Kirta takes place every year on the first Sunday in July, giving you a fixed cultural occasion for a trip to Scheifling. Other options include architectural history, art, hiking, wildlife watching and riding lessons, offering a range of ways to spend your time.
Architectural History, Local History Museum and Art
The local history museum is a small museum housed in the 400-year-old wooden house “Keuschn in der Gass’n”. Visits and guided tours of the local history museum and pipe museum are only possible by prior telephone appointment. Please arrange your visit by phone in advance.
Scheifling’s Roman Catholic parish church is dedicated to Saint Thomas. The church is essentially Romanesque and is partly surrounded by the wall of the former cemetery. Both the church and the former cemetery are protected historic monuments. This site thus brings together a specific architectural classification and the history of the former cemetery.
The Hirt-Haus Atelier adds a distinct connection to the arts. Sculptors Rudolf Hirt and Angelika Hirt-Thomsen founded it in Scheifling in 1984; it exhibits works by regional and international artists. For those interested in art as well as architectural history, it offers another theme to explore during a stay.
Kirta: Date and Tradition
The Tabakraucher-Lied is traditionally sung at the Scheiflinger Kirta. It begins with the line “Am Sunntag ist Scheiflinger Kirta, da kemman die Tabakracher zsamm”. The annual date and the song offer two distinct points of reference for the festival: one for planning a trip and the other for its longstanding tradition.
If you want to travel specifically for the Kirta, check the event dates before your trip. The Kirta is therefore a different reason to visit from a hike, which is not tied to a single festival Sunday.
Hiking, Cycle Path and Train
The “W75: Over the Steinschloss” hiking route is open year-round and ends at Scheifling station. These are useful details when planning a hike: you know the named endpoint and the route’s stated seasonal availability.
At Freisambad, the pond is right beside the Mur Cycle Path. A Murtalbahn stop is a two-minute walk from Freisambad. These details address different practical questions about the area: the cycle path by the pond and the location of the train stop. If you plan to travel by train, check the Murtalbahn timetable before your trip.
Wildlife Watching and Riding Lessons
More than 40 different species and around 250 animals live at the Scheifling Animal Park and Farm Experience, in the park surrounding the Prieler farm. A walk through the animal park offers the chance to observe and photograph wildlife, domestic animals and farm animals at close range.
Children aged three and over can learn to ride at Ponyhof Schrattenberg. Lessons are offered on ponies and small horses and are available by telephone appointment. Please arrange a time by phone. Wildlife watching on a walk and a pre-arranged riding lesson are two different ways to spend your time; the right choice depends on which activity you are looking for.
Plan a Stay That Suits You
A visit on a fixed date is different from a hiking option listed as available in every season. Decide on your priorities and preferred travel dates before looking for hotels for your stay in Scheifling.
