Vietnam’s cultural heritage encompasses sites from very different eras: My Son dates from the 4th to the 13th century AD, Hoi An represents an exceptionally well-preserved trading port from the 15th to the 19th century, and the Thang Long Citadel was built in the 11th century. These traces of time reveal religious sites, trading history, and long-lasting political power—not a single account of the past.

Traces of Time in Cultural Heritage and Architecture

The towers of My Son illustrate the site’s role during the Champa Kingdom: for most of its existence, it was the kingdom’s religious and political capital. Thang Long, in turn, was a center of regional political power for almost thirteen centuries. The buildings of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long and the remains of the 18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site reflect a unique Southeast Asian culture shaped by influences from China and the ancient Champa Kingdom.

Hoi An Ancient Town tells a different story. As an exceptionally well-preserved Southeast Asian trading port from the 15th to the 19th century, it represents a long period of exchange. The Cu Chi Tunnels offer another historical perspective: the Viet Cong used the more than 250-kilometer-long tunnel system during the Vietnam War to evade American and South Vietnamese troops. Together, these sites show how varied the historical themes of a trip through Vietnam can be.

Hue also brings together different perspectives. The Complex of Hue Monuments is shaped by the Perfume River and Ngu Binh Mountain, also known as the Royal Screen. The Hue Citadel includes palaces, pavilions, and theaters. Thien Mụ Pagoda has a distinctive seven-story tower. In Hue, you can experience the influence of the landscape, architecture, and a widely admired religious landmark—without reducing these impressions to a single attraction.

Island Landscapes, Limestone, and Underground Worlds

The scale of the landscapes also varies considerably. The Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago protected area covers 65,650 hectares and includes 1,133 islands and islets. Kayaking in Ha Long Bay offers close-up views of quiet lagoons and fishing boats. As conditions and providers may change, check the specific offering in advance.

The Trang An Landscape Complex covers 6,226 hectares within the Trang An Limestone Massif. Underground, the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Hin Nam No National Park protected area extends across more than 220 kilometers of documented caves and underground river systems. These figures represent different types of landscapes: an extensive limestone massif on one hand, and caves and underground rivers on the other.

Access to Phong Nha Cave includes a river trip; kayaking tours offer an alternative way to see the cave. Check current operating procedures and tour availability before your visit. This lets you plan around the type of experience you want, without treating the river trip and kayaking tour as the same offering.

Trails, Nature, and Local Discoveries

At sacred Yen Tu, stone steps lead from Thuong Pagoda through a quiet bamboo forest to Dong Pagoda, at the summit of the 1,068-meter-high mountain. A cable car line from Tay Yen Tu is 2.1 kilometers long and has 45 cabins for visitors. The Tay Yen Tu Spiritual and Ecological Tourist Area is next to the Tay Yen Tu Nature Reserve. The surrounding area has thousands of hectares of primary forest and many wildlife species.

Further experiences await in the south of the country. Binh Thuy Ancient House in Can Tho City is a rare, well-preserved example of a characteristic Mekong Delta home. Thieng Lieng is a community-based tourism destination in Ho Chi Minh City. In Ben Tre, a boat trip through canals winding through coconut groves is part of a travel itinerary. These examples highlight different things: a single historic house, a community-based destination, and a journey through a waterscape shaped by coconut palms.

Domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City land at Phu Bai Airport, 30 minutes by car from Hue. Check current flight times separately. Afterward, you can choose which historical sites, nature, and landscape experiences to focus on, based on what interests you most.
