Thua Thien-Hue brings together imperial heritage, lagoons and coastal scenery. In Huế, the citadel, tombs and pagoda tell the story of the Nguyễn dynasty; the region’s natural features include mangrove forests, mountain landscapes and brackish-water lagoons. Here, you can discover a variety of places, from historic buildings and their history to landscapes shaped by water.
Huế and its imperial heritage
From 1802 to 1945, Huế was the political, cultural and religious center of unified Vietnam under the Nguyễn dynasty. The Complex of Huế Monuments was added to the World Heritage List in 1993. The citadel contained the imperial residence, the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City and other royal palaces. The tombs of Minh Mạng and Khải Định are part of the complex; the imperial tombs lie upstream along the Perfume River.
The Perfume River winds through the capital, the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City and the inner city of Huế. Together with Ngu Bình Mountain, it forms the natural setting for the monuments. The river and mountain are therefore as much a part of the heritage landscape as the palaces and tombs. Thien Mu Pagoda is one of Huế’s most revered sites. Its Phước-Duyên Tower was built between 1844 and 1846 at the request of King Thiệu Trị and has seven stories.
Different kinds of buildings and collections offer further insights into the region’s history. An-Định Palace is an architectural and artistic work of the Nguyễn dynasty from the early 20th century, located on the An Cựu River in the Phú Nhuận urban district. The Nguyễn-Chí-Thanh Museum displays nearly 400 documents, artifacts and images, including numerous original objects used by the general during his lifetime. The exhibition space for Lục-Bộ culture is located at 79 Nguyễn-Chí-Diễu Street in the Đông Ba urban district and is recognized as a tourist site.
Lagoons, coastline and mountain scenery
The Tam Giang–Cầu Hai lagoon system is considered the largest lagoon system in Southeast Asia. Đầm Chuồn is a brackish-water lagoon within the Tam Giang system. The two names do not refer to separate types of landscape: Đầm Chuồn is part of the larger lagoon area. Here, a focus on a specific place goes hand in hand with a broader view of an extensive water system.
Bạch Mã Mountain, in Phú Lộc District, has a different character. It rises to 1,444 meters and has streams and waterfalls, including Đỗ-Quyên Waterfall. At Lăng Cô Bay, below Hải Vân Pass, the coastal features described include an almost untouched beach, clear water and a diverse ecosystem. In the region, lagoons, mountains and bays thus stand side by side as distinct landscape highlights.
Explore by water and on foot
In Ru Cha, you can walk through the mangrove forest or cycle along the mangrove trail. The forest is home to thousands of animal and plant species. To explore by water, visitors can rent a small wooden boat with a boat operator there; check availability locally. This pairs the experience of the mangrove forest with a second, water-based perspective on Ru Cha.
The route to Trúc Lâm Bạch Mã Monastery also crosses the water: visitors reach it by taking small boats across Truồi Lake. Check local boat service arrangements before your trip. At Đầm Chuồn, visitors can enjoy local specialties in a floating house after exploring the lagoon. As individual operators and their availability may change, it is also advisable to check locally. The “Hoàng hôn phá Tam Giang” tour is one of the ecotours listed for Thua Thien-Hue; check in advance whether it is currently operating.
Dishes and culinary traditions
Huế cuisine includes imperial dishes, served as part of elaborate multi-course menus. One specific example of regional culinary tradition is Huế-style Bánh khoái: the pancake is served with a fresh salad of figs, starfruit and cucumber, along with a thick sauce made from peanuts and pork liver. These two culinary themes offer different perspectives: the multi-course menu on the one hand, and the more detailed ingredients and accompaniments of an individual dish on the other.
Getting there and planning your trip
Phú Bài Airport is about a 30-minute drive from Huế. The “Connecting Central Heritage” service links Huế and Đà Nẵng and includes two pairs of trains, numbered HD1/2 and HD3/4. Check the current train schedule before traveling, and bear in mind that road conditions may change when planning your journey. When choosing your accommodation, this travel information can be a practical point of reference alongside your cultural and landscape interests.
