In western Nghệ An, Pù Mát National Park forms the core zone of the UNESCO-recognized Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve. The reserve comprises three core areas: one national park and two nature reserves. It is home to 295 bird species, including 22 species that are globally threatened or endangered. The national park itself has 2,500 plant species and nearly 1,000 animal species. These figures offer a sense of the diversity of nature in Nghệ An.

Forests, Waterfalls, and River Experiences

Khe Kèm Waterfall lies in the core zone of Pù Mát and plunges down in three tiers in front of pristine forest. Visitors can enjoy the cool natural surroundings and follow a trail toward the top of the waterfall. Check the latest visitor information in advance. In Tam Đình Commune, you can also see a stand of mature Săng-lẻ trees covering about 100 hectares.

Experiences on the Giăng River take center stage: at the Phà Lài ecotourism area, visitors can kayak and ride a tandem zipline. Adventurous visitors can also travel upstream on the Giăng, navigating rapids along the way. As river conditions vary, it is worth checking them before setting out. Those who prefer to explore community life and agricultural experiences will find a range of options: in Thái Minh, visitors can learn about life in traditional stilt houses, drink Rượu cần, and take part in local songs and dances. The Eo Gió Eco-Experience Garden combines high-tech agroforestry production with an experimental farm system where visitors can learn and gain practical experience.

Nature around Thái Minh also reveals itself in different ways. Hang Mó preserves its ecosystem and features a variety of stalactite formations that visitors can explore. Forest, river, cave, and community experiences offer different sides of a stay in Nghệ An.

Memorial Sites and Cultural Heritage

The Kim Liên Memorial Site comprises the Hoàng Trù and Làng Sen monument complexes. Documents, artifacts, and cultural and historical spaces are connected to Hồ Chí Minh’s homeland, family, and youth, as well as his two visits to his home region. On May 10, 2012, the memorial site was classified as a special national monument of Vietnam.

The Phan Bội Châu Memorial Site in Nam Đàn consists of two commemorative locations about 1.5 kilometers apart. The exhibition house displays hundreds of historical photographs, original artifacts, and scholarly and artistic documents about his life and work for national liberation. By government decision dated December 22, 2016, the memorial site was classified as a special national historical monument.

The Nghệ An Museum preserves 31,327 artifacts of historical and cultural significance; three national treasures received official state recognition in 2017. In Vinh, Hồ Chí Minh Square is a cultural landmark of national stature with ideological and artistic value. Together, the museum and square, along with the memorial sites, offer different ways to explore the region’s history and culture.

Temple Traditions and Festivals

Đền Cờn was built during the Trần dynasty and is dedicated to the Tứ vị Thánh nương. The Đền Cờn Festival is listed as Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage. It takes place every year from the 19th to the 21st day of the first lunar month; the program includes religious ceremonies, a procession, communal rites at Đền Cờn Ngoài, and folk games. Another festival, the Đền Cửa Festival, takes place annually on the third day of the third lunar month and features traditional games and performances. As both dates follow the lunar calendar, it is worth checking the festival dates separately when planning your trip.

The Coast and Regional Cuisine

Further along the coast, you’ll find a very different set of experiences. Cửa Hội is a shallow, relatively unspoiled beach, with the Song Ngư Islands offshore. Visitors can enjoy local seafood there, including the specialty Mực nhảy. At Diễn Thành Beach, you can collect clams with local fishermen. Bãi Lữ brings together the sea and mountain forest: mountains meet the coast here, and the sea reaches deep inland. When choosing what to focus on, you can weigh up nature in the west, cultural sites, community experiences, and coastal landscapes.
