A battle lasting 81 days in 1972 is closely associated with the Quang Tri Citadel. This special national monument is located in the center of Quang Tri City. The citadel has been restored and is now a memorial site. At its center stands a memorial stele to the fallen soldiers. The historical event and the present-day act of remembrance are thus closely connected at this site.
History in different forms
At the Vinh Moc Tunnels, visitors can experience the underground living and fighting spaces used by the local population during the war and learn about the region’s history and culture. The tunnels are located in Vinh Moc hamlet, in Vinh Thach commune, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province. The focus here is on life underground—a different way of engaging with history than at the citadel memorial site.
The Hien Luong–Ben Hai ensemble is also a special national revolutionary historical monument. It is located in Vinh Thanh commune, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province. Historically, it is associated with the period when Vietnam was divided into a North and a South following the 1954 Geneva Accords. The Thong Nhat Non Song Festival is held every year on April 30 at Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River. The specific program may vary; if the festival is important to your trip, check the latest program information.
The Ta Con airfield relic offers another historical highlight. It is a visitor attraction and preserves numerous artifacts of historical value. The specific display of the artifacts may change.
Coastal landscapes and marine nature
Cua Tung Beach is located in Cua Tung town, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province. Fine sand and rocky outcrops extending into the sea define its described appearance. These specific landscape features distinguish this coastal attraction from the region’s historical memorial sites.
Con Co Island offers a marine nature experience: its rich marine ecosystem includes coral reefs, fish and rare aquatic life. Cua Viet and Cua Tung are among the ports providing access to the island. Visitors typically reach Con Co by boat from Cua Viet port; the journey takes about two to three hours. Schedules and operating conditions may change, so it is worth checking before making plans.
Quang Tri’s tourism plan for 2026 also focuses on the coast and the island: it proposes developing the Cua Tung–Cua Viet–Con Co Island route into a national tourism area. This development direction, published on February 5, 2026, may be revised.
Find the right focus
This way, planning starts with the experiences you want to discover in the region, rather than with a prearranged route.
