In the 16th and 17th centuries, Phố Hiến was an international trading port in Đàng Ngoài. Two stone inscriptions in front of the courtyard of Chùa Hiến preserve historical information about the establishment of the trading settlement. The Tổ lychee tree near Chùa Hiến is also part of the site's history: it is considered a symbol of Phố Hiến's specialty. Trade, memory, and local specialties thus offer different perspectives on the place.

Phố Hiến and its Monuments

The Phố Hiến monument complex was recognized as a special national monument in 2014 and includes 16 representative monuments. This recognition places the history of trade within a broader heritage context, while the two steles preserve information about the settlement's origins. Those interested in the history of Hưng Yên will find both a historical point of reference and tangible records of the past here.

Places of Scholarship, Architecture, and Remembrance

At Văn Miếu Xích Đằng, the history of education sits alongside recurring cultural activities. The site was classified at the national level on December 2, 1992, under Decision No. 3959-VH/QĐ. Nine steles record 161 successful examination candidates. Cultural and educational activities are held there annually, including ceremonies, Ca trù singing, and the practice of requesting calligraphy. Exact dates may vary according to the lunar calendar.

The architecture of Chùa Thái Lạc also offers a tangible reference point for understanding the building's history: the pagoda was built during the Trần dynasty. A relatively well-preserved wooden frame from that period remains in the central bay of the upper hall. This type of preserved frame is considered very rare in Vietnam. Chùa Nôm offers a different focus: rebuilt in the 17th century, the pagoda preserves more than 100 clay Buddha statues that are several hundred years old. Its Quan-Âm pavilion stands in the middle of a lake.

Đền Tiên La brings together a historical connection and a religious dedication. The temple is dedicated to Bát Nạn Tướng Quân Vũ Thị Thục, a female military commander associated with the Trưng Sisters' uprising. On November 12, 1986, Đền Tiên La was recognized as a national monument under Decision No. 235/VH/QĐ. The memorial house for Hải Thượng Lãn Ông presents the life, work, and medical contributions of Lê Hữu Trác; the memorial complex was classified at the national level in 1990. Before visiting the memorial house, check which exhibitions are currently on display.

Temples and Festivals on the Lunar Calendar

The festivals offer another way to understand Hưng Yên's cultural connections. The Đền Phù Ủng festival takes place every year from the first to the 25th day of the first lunar month; the main festival runs from the 11th to the 13th day. The temple was recognized as a national historical and cultural monument in 1988 and classified as a tourist site by Hưng Yên Province in 2019. Since the lunar dates fall on different Gregorian dates each year, check the festival dates for your year of travel.

The Chử Đồng Tử Festival takes place every year from the 10th to the 12th day of the second lunar month at the temples of Đền Đa Hòa and Đền Dạ Trạch; here, too, the Gregorian dates vary. Đền Đa Hòa was classified as a cultural monument in 1962. Đền Dạ Trạch is set in open surroundings beside the Dạ Trạch pond. The festival tradition thus links two temples, while the setting at Dạ Trạch also has its own landscape connection.

Travel Planning Essentials

Hưng Yên has road, waterway, and rail transport systems that are described as favorable for regional exchange. For specific routes and schedules, check the relevant connections. A river tourism route from Hanoi to Hưng Yên along the Red River is under development; it connects riverside pagodas with spiritual and ecological experiences. When choosing what to focus on, you can use the differences as a guide: Phố Hiến represents trade history, Văn Miếu Xích Đằng represents scholarly heritage and annual activities, and the temples represent architecture, dedications, and festival traditions.
