Tea Highlands and Seasonal Discoveries

Around 3,000 hectares of tea fields define Mộc Châu; the region is also Vietnam’s largest tea-growing area. On the Mộc Châu Plateau, expansive, undulating plantations stretch across the landscape. The average elevation is over 1,050 metres, and the area also has a rare temperate microclimate. Mộc Châu is in Sơn La Province, around 200 kilometres from Hanoi. Together, these features give the landscape its distinct character, shaped by tea and altitude.

At the Moc Suong Ecotourism Area, you can experience a traditional tea ceremony and learn about tea processing. Picking ripe plums is another seasonal option: in summer, travellers can pick them straight from the trees in Mộc Châu’s orchards. Ang Pine Tree Village offers a different impression. Its highlights include traditional stilt houses, a lake surrounded by pine forests, nearby hills covered in tea, and flowering plants. Here, tea is part of the experience as a feature of the landscape, at a ceremony, and in the processing of tea.

Caves and Cultural Traces

The Hang động bản Ôn cave area comprises five caves with stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of shapes. A purpose-built trail leads up to three of the caves. Dong Doi, also called Bat Cave, stands out for its size: it covers more than 7,000 square metres, is 100 metres high, and is 930 metres long. At Hang động bản Ôn, the number of caves and the route to some of them are the main features; Dong Doi is best described by its dimensions.

The region’s cultural sites also reveal its different facets. The Hết-Chá Festival of the White Thai in bản Áng, Mộc Châu, is held annually to give thanks to healers, the heavens, ancestors and spirits. Exact dates can vary, so it is advisable to check the festival date before planning your trip around it. Vặt Hồng Pagoda, also called Chùa Chiền Viện, is a Buddhist architectural monument. It was the largest Buddhist place of worship in the northwestern highlands and is now a ruin. The historic Sơn La Prison is a particularly significant national monument of Vietnam. Thẳm Tát Tòng, meanwhile, is recognised as a national scenic site of Vietnam.

Waterfalls, Bridges and Trails

At Dải Yếm Waterfall, the two tiers are at the heart of the experience. At the lower tier, visitors can explore the surroundings and swim in the pool below. The Love Glass Bridge, also called Cầu Kính Tình Yêu, offers a view of the waterfall. The transparent Bach Long suspension bridge is 150 metres high and 633 metres long, and visitors can walk across it. As bridge operating conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before planning a visit.

Those interested in a mountain hike will find a steep trail through dense forest at the summit of Pha Luong. It reaches an altitude of 2,000 metres and offers views of the border area between Vietnam and Laos. The route to the summit is about 40 kilometres long; the ascent takes between one and four hours, depending on fitness. Check current trail conditions before hiking. This time range provides a concrete point of reference when planning a trip, while tea ceremonies, caves and cultural sites offer different highlights.
