Cross-country skiing with several possible return routes, four snowshoe trails and a mountain village at the entrance to Val Piumogna give Dalpe a distinctive character. The Chiesa di S. Carlo also adds a striking piece of village history. If you are planning a stay, it is easy to distinguish between the main attractions: winter sports, the landscape of the side valley or the village’s architectural history.
Getting there and location
Dalpe is accessible by public and private transport via a well-maintained cantonal road. The municipality is about 8 kilometres from the Quinto motorway exit. It is located in the Swiss canton of Ticino, in the Quinto district and the Leventina district. Dalpe is a mountain village on a plateau at the entrance to Val Piumogna, a side valley of the Valle Leventina. The municipality also includes the hamlet of Cornone.
Winter activities with different focuses
The Bedrina ski area is located in Dalpe at an altitude of 1,200 metres and is particularly suited to families, beginners and children. Facilities include a children’s carousel, a pony lift and a conveyor belt. Opening times vary by season, so plan according to your intended travel dates. This takes into account the difference between a listed activity and what is operating during your stay.
There are also several options for cross-country skiing. The Pista di fondo a Dalpe is five kilometres long and suitable for both classic and skating techniques. If you do not want to cover the entire route, you can return to the starting point after 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 kilometres. Two additional cross-country ski trails, ranging from 3.5 to 7.5 kilometres in length, are located near the Bedrina ski area. The listed trail lengths and return options help you gauge the scope of a day’s skiing without confusing the different trails.
Snowshoe trails and route conditions
Dalpe has four snowshoe trails offering different experiences. The Marmot is a circular route through Val Piumogna, offering a different route format from the cross-country ski trail, with its designated return points. Snow conditions can affect access to snowshoe trails. On the marked routes, crossing the bridge over Val Piumogna is not recommended: an avalanche zone lies beyond it. Check conditions before setting off and follow the warning on the route.
Val Piumogna and village history
Meadows, larch forests and fir forests define the landscape around Dalpe. The Piumogna River rises in Val Piumogna, which lies within the municipality, above Lago di Morghirolo. The mountain lake is located at the upper end of the valley. South of Dalpe, the Piumogna forms a waterfall that is visible from the village. Farther up Val Piumogna is the Capanna Campo Tencia of the Swiss Alpine Club. These landmarks give the landscape a clear framework: from the village on the plateau, through the side valley, to the upper end of the valley.
In the village itself, the Chiesa di S. Carlo offers a distinct cultural attraction. The rectangular church was remodelled in the 19th century, and its bell tower is attached to the choir. Here, the building’s form and renovation come together in a specific structure, rather than treating village history as a general addition to the mountain landscape.
