Around 50 houses, each named after an important composer, define the Villaggio della Musica in Sobrio. There are also historic churches and trails through forests and meadows. Sobrio is part of Faido in Ticino and was an independent political municipality until 2016.
Music at the Villaggio della Musica
The Villaggio della Musica hosts festivals, event series, concerts, courses, masterclasses, exhibitions and competitions. The activities may vary. Casa Gustav Mahler is also part of the village’s musical character: it has a small concert hall, soundproofed study rooms, a conference room and gardens. These facilities may change.
The Sobrio Festival is dedicated to classical music and welcomes particularly talented young musicians from around the world. It takes place at Casa Mahler and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo. The festival period runs from mid-June to the end of October and may vary from one edition to the next. If you plan to time your trip around a concert or festival, check the latest dates in advance.
Churches, village character and local festivals
The Chiesa di San Lorenzo is Sobrio’s main church, halfway between the settlements of Villa and Ronzano. It was first mentioned in 1300 and has been repaired and extended several times. Its notable features include a five-sided pulpit dating from 1699.
The Oratorio di San Rocco in Villa was blessed on 26 April 1676 and is used for services during the cold season. If you are planning a visit, check the current access arrangements. The ruined Gramudél chapel lies halfway along the trail connecting Sobrio and Giornico. In Ronzano stands the Santo Crocifisso chapel, commissioned by a member of the Rossi family who had emigrated to Milan.
Sobrio-Ronzano is listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance. For more than 30 years, residents of Ronzano have organised the 1 August festival to raise funds for the restoration of the Santo Crocifisso chapel; the specific programme may vary. The 2026 Feste di S. Lorenzo programme describes a recurring five-day summer festival with food, live music and entertainment for the whole family. It includes food evenings and the traditional Buffet di San Lorenzo. Future programmes may differ.
Landscape and hiking
Villa and Ronzano are surrounded by forests and a partly terraced cultivated landscape. Above the two settlement centres are mostly coniferous forests, interspersed with alpine farmsteads and meadows. Sobrio lies at an altitude of approximately 1,117 metres above sea level.
The Giro delle Tre Valli hike begins and ends in Sobrio and is an out-and-back route. It follows Pizzo Matro through larch forests, colourful meadows and pastures. As trail conditions can change with the seasons, it is advisable to check them before setting out. Sobrio is also often chosen as an additional stage on the Strada Alta hiking route.
This gives rise to two different planning questions: would you like to start and finish your hike in Sobrio, or include the village as an additional stage on the Strada Alta? The routes mentioned serve different purposes; in either case, you should check the specific trail conditions before hiking.
