Airolo lies in the Leventina Valley and the Lepontine Alps, on the southern slope of the Gotthard Pass. The southern portals of the Gotthard railway tunnel and the Gotthard road tunnel on the A2 are also in Airolo. This means different themes can take centre stage when planning your trip: historic routes, hiking trails, winter sports and mountain biking.
Gotthard Pass: fort and historic road
Forte Airolo was built between 1886 and 1890 and was considered one of the most modern fortifications until the First World War. Its artillery firepower was intended to protect the Gotthard railway, the pass road and the road into the Bedretto Valley. These three transport routes show the fort’s strategic importance; a visit therefore connects the history of the town with the history of the Gotthard.
The historic Strada della Tremola runs from Airolo to the Gotthard Pass via numerous hairpin bends. It is considered Switzerland’s longest historic road structure. If you include this pass road in your plans, bear in mind that road access may vary seasonally.
Hiking routes with different levels of difficulty
The Strada degli Alpi Bedretto is a 13-kilometre trekking route with no major elevation changes. It starts right in Pesciüm, which you can reach from Airolo by cable car. The route and the journey to Pesciüm are therefore part of the same day’s plans; check the current cable car service before your trip. Conditions on the trail also depend on the season.
Another option is the challenging mountain hiking trail Sentiero Alto Tremorgio. It starts at the Pesciüm mid-station and leads to Rodi-Fiesso. Along the route, you can discover crystal-clear lakes, ridges and mountain pastures. Unlike the Strada degli Alpi Bedretto, this is explicitly a challenging mountain hiking trail; conditions and access may vary depending on the season and weather.
Winter sports and mountain biking
The Airolo-Pesciüm ski area has 30 kilometres of ski slopes. Its lift system comprises two aerial cableways, three ski lifts, one chairlift and one pony lift. Slope availability and winter operations are seasonal, and the lift system and its operations may also change. To get to the ski lifts, bus route 120 connects Airolo railway station directly to them. Check the latest timetable and operating information before your trip.
For mountain bikers, Airolo Bike Park offers more than 22 kilometres of trails with rollers and berms. The trails vary in length and difficulty, with options ranging from beginner to experienced mountain biker routes. Trail details and ratings may change as the park develops. This range of options means you can plan based on trail length and the stated difficulty level.
Culture and alpine products
The permanent exhibition “No limits! – I campioni dell'altitudine” in Airolo explores the remarkable adaptations organisms make to the extreme conditions of the alpine environment, particularly the biodiversity of Val Piora. If you would like to visit the exhibition, check visiting arrangements before your trip.
At Alpe Pesciüm, the cheesemaker explains in the morning how the alpine cheeses are made. During your visit, you can also taste and buy products from the alp. The seasonal offering is described as available from June to October; check the current visiting dates in advance.
Choose your travel dates and accommodation
When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different time windows together: the cheesemaker visit is a seasonal morning activity, while ski operations and slope availability depend on the winter season. The season and weather also affect the hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Airolo, first decide which of these activities you want to shape your stay, then plan around the conditions that apply to them.
