The Torbiera della Bedrina offers a concrete introduction to the nature around Prato: the wetland lies at 1,230 metres above sea level in the Val Leventina, between the municipalities of Prato and Dalpe. It comprises three wetlands of national importance. The main trail connects the two entrances and is just over one kilometre long; it presents no particular difficulties.

Raised bog and trails in the municipality

The Torbiera della Bedrina can be reached on foot from Prato, Rodi or Dalpe. By post bus, you can travel to the Dalpe Valle stop; check the timetable before setting off. For your visit, you can therefore choose between walking from one of the places mentioned and travelling to the bus stop. The length of the main trail also gives you a practical idea of the route through the area, without implying a walking time.

Outside the bog, Prato also has walking trails through forests and meadows. The municipality also includes Lago del Tremorgio and Pizzo Campolungo. These landscape and nature attractions can be considered distinct highlights of the destination, alongside its historic sites.

Skiing and geological trails

Sci Lift Prato Leventina offers five kilometres of pistes on a west-facing slope. The facilities include black and red pistes for experienced skiers, as well as a blue piste that winds through the forest for beginners; the pistes are suitable for all skiers. Operations may vary by season, so check the latest operating information before making plans.

The Campolungo geotourism trail consists of two routes with different profiles. The gentler Tremorgio route runs along the lake of the same name. The more demanding Campolungo route crosses an alpine landscape and leads to Capanna Leìt at 2,250 metres above sea level. This gives you a choice between a gentler lakeside route and a more challenging route with a higher destination.

The trail was opened by the municipality of Prato Leventina in 2016 and developed in collaboration with geologist Filippo Bianconi and the cantonal Natural History Museum. Its theme is the geological history of the Alpine range. The two route options and the geological focus give the Campolungo trail a different character from the paths through forests and meadows or the main trail at Torbiera della Bedrina.

The Via delle Genti and the history of the buildings

The Museo del Dazio Grande in Rodi, Prato (Leventina), has a permanent exhibition devoted to the history of the Via delle Genti. It traces the development of trade routes across the Gotthard, from the old mule track to the Alpine transit route of AlpTransit. Visitors interested in the cultural history of transport routes will find a historical perspective here that complements the present-day trails and geological route with a different theme.

The Chiesa di San Giorgio also reflects several phases of construction. It was built in the 17th century over an existing Romanesque chapel, which was mentioned in 1210. A six-storey bell tower remains from the earlier building. Beneath the exterior portico is a depiction of Saint George with the dragon and the princess. It was probably painted by an unknown artist in the 15th or 16th century.

Climbing as another activity

There are outdoor climbing areas in the municipality of Prato Leventina. If you plan to climb, check the local climbing conditions. Alongside the short main trail through the bog, the walking paths through forests and meadows, and the Campolungo routes of varying difficulty, climbing areas are another activity to consider.
