Lavorgo lies on the valley floor of the Leventina at an altitude of 615 metres, at the upper end of the Biaschina Gorge. Two different hiking routes with specific time estimates can help you plan your trip: the Lavorgo–Calonico–Rossura–Chiggiogna–Lavorgo loop and the ViaGottardo stage to Biasca. There is also a waterfall, a Baroque chapel and the Piottino power station with its industrial history. This lets you choose how to explore Lavorgo based on the time you have and your interest in scenery, trails or architectural history.
Hiking with Different Time Estimates
The Lavorgo–Calonico–Rossura–Chiggiogna–Lavorgo loop passes through Calonico, Rossura and Chiggiogna before returning to Lavorgo. The section between Lavorgo and Calonico includes a historic connecting path. The loop is estimated to take about four hours and involves 520 metres of elevation gain. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The time estimate helps you fit this several-hour tour into your day.
The ViaGottardo stage starts in Lavorgo and ends in Biasca. It is 21 kilometres long, takes 6 hours and 25 minutes, and involves 840 metres of ascent. This makes it considerably longer in terms of time than the loop, which returns to Lavorgo. Seasonal conditions may affect access; check them before setting out on the stage. The different endpoints are important when planning: unlike the loop, the destination is Biasca.
Waterfall and Climbing Area
Cascata Gribbiasca lies between Chiggiogna and Lavorgo. The waterfall carries a lot of water and shows its full force, particularly after heavy rainfall. Water levels and safe viewing conditions may depend on the weather; take this into account when planning a visit.
The surrounding area also has something to offer climbing enthusiasts: a rock-climbing area is located in Chiggiogna. Check current access and safety conditions in advance. This lets you include climbing in your trip planning separately from your choice of hiking route.
Santa Petronilla: Chapel and Trail to Calonico
The Chapel of Santa Petronilla in Lavorgo is a Baroque building constructed in 1662, with a barrel vault. Older buildings may have stood there. A partly paved mule track to Calonico begins at the chapel and passes through chestnut forests and pastures. The site thus brings together a specific architectural feature and a described route through the landscape. If you are interested in architectural forms, the barrel vault offers a striking glimpse of the chapel’s design; the mule track also leads through woodland and pastureland.
Piottino Power Station and the Bridge
The Piottino power station was built between 1928 and 1932 to a design by Milanese architect Giovanni Greppi. It is associated with the Lombard industrial style of the early 20th century. A railway bridge built in 1929 connects the power station across the River Ticino to Lavorgo station. The bridge between the power station and Lavorgo is used mainly as a footpath. The dates place the bridge within the power station’s construction period without implying that the two structures were built at the same time.
Villages Above the Valley Floor
Higher-lying terrace settlements can be reached from Lavorgo. Calonico, Anzonico, Cavagnago and Sobrio lie on the left side of the valley; Chironico lies on the right side. This orientation complements the loop route, which passes through Calonico and Chiggiogna. If you are considering visiting other places in the Leventina, the valley sides mentioned here can help you distinguish their locations.
