Bedretto combines alpine scenery with hiking destinations, history and an underground laboratory. Val Bedretto is a typical U-shaped alpine valley: the green valley floor gives way to wooded slopes, alpine terraces and rocky peaks higher up. When planning your trip, the season and the activities you want to enjoy are important—the options range from summer hikes to winter tours, depending on conditions.

The valley’s shape, the pass and the history of the landscape

The road over Nufenen Pass connects Val Bedretto with Val Goms and is open to traffic in summer. Since accessibility varies by season, check conditions before travelling. Another route, the Strada degli Alpi della Valle Bedretto, runs between Airolo-Pesciüm and Ronco at an altitude of about 1,700 to 1,800 metres and passes through numerous alpine pastures. It is currently closed; check its current status before planning to use it.

The formation of the valley can also be traced through specific geographical features: during the Ice Age, the Gries Glacier flowed from Valais over the 2,485-metre-high Cornopass into the upper part of Val Bedretto. Today, water from the Gries Reservoir at 2,386 metres is carried through the valley in pressure pipelines to Lake Maggiore. It is part of the Maggia power plant system.

Hiking destinations and elevations

The trail to Laghetto delle Pigne has an elevation gain of 664 metres, takes no more than two hours and is considered an easy route. The actual hiking time depends on conditions and your own pace. One route starts in All'Acqua, passes the new Piansecco Hut and can return to All'Acqua by a different trail.

Another destination is the Laghetti di Corno Gries, set in alpine scenery above Val Bedretto at the foot of the pass of the same name. This summer-accessible mountain hike starts at Alpe di Cruina, passes Capanna Corno Gries SAC and reaches the two lakes at elevations of 2,477 and 2,485 metres. The hiking trails in Val Bedretto are well signposted; nevertheless, check trail conditions before setting out, as signs and conditions can change with maintenance and the season.

Winter tours and the Four Springs Trail

Possible winter activities in Val Bedretto include ski touring with skins and snowshoe hikes. One suggested destination for an ascent is Pizzo Cristallina, at 2,911 metres. Winter routes depend on snow and avalanche conditions; check these conditions before making plans.

Capanna Piansecco is on the Four Springs Trail. Since 2012, this trail has connected the cantons of Uri, Graubünden, Ticino and Valais, leading to the sources of the Rhine, Reuss, Ticino and Rhône. This places an individual hut in the context of a long-distance route, without implying a specific itinerary for the day.

BedrettoLab: a guided tour through a rock tunnel

ETH Zurich, in collaboration with the Sasso San Gottardo Museum, offers public guided tours of BedrettoLab, ETH’s underground laboratory in Switzerland’s longest natural rock tunnel. During a tour, you can observe geological phenomena at close range. The route is 4.5 kilometres long, can be completed at a brisk pace and runs over uneven ground through a partially lit rock tunnel. You must carry a 4.5-kilogram self-rescue device. Tour availability depends on the schedule; check dates and participation requirements when booking.

From Airolo, take bus 112 towards All'Acqua to the “Bedretto, Bivio per Ronco” stop. Check seasonal services and the current timetable before travelling.

Church, mineral cave and alpine cheese

The Chiesa Santissima Martiri maccabei is dedicated to Saint Eusebius and was first mentioned in the 13th century. It was demolished and subsequently rebuilt on the same site in 1594, 1634 and 1695. These repeated rebuilds give the church a distinctive historical depth within the history of the village.

The Grotta dei Minerali in Cioss Prato is a themed museum and is considered suitable for families. Visitors can enter only when the Buvette in Cioss Prato is open. Therefore, check whether the Buvette is open and the cave is accessible before visiting. At the still-active Alpeggio di Cristallina, you can visit the cheese cellars when the facility is open and buy fresh cheese directly from the alpine farm host.

Choose when to visit

When choosing your travel dates, start with the activities you have in mind: the pass road and the hike to the Laghetti di Corno Gries are summer options; in winter, ski touring and snowshoe hikes depend on snow and avalanche conditions. Plan BedrettoLab tours around available dates, and note that the Buvette must be open to access the Grotta dei Minerali. This will help you match seasonal options to your planned activities.
