Piotta is a village in the Leventina district of the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Its combination of village architecture, hydropower and a distinctive mountain railway makes it an appealing place to visit. The Ritom funicular provides transport to the alpine lake region of Val Piora and is also an attraction in its own right. You can combine local history with an excursion into the surrounding nature.

Ritom Funicular and Lake Ritom

The journey on the Ritom funicular takes twelve minutes. Its maximum gradient is 87.8 percent; along the way, you can enjoy views across the valley floor, the Alta Leventina and the surrounding mountains. When planning your visit, treat the journey time as a separate part of your schedule: it describes the ride, not the time you will spend afterwards in the lake region. The railway is both a means of transport and an experience in its own right.

Lake Ritom is accessible by the Ritom funicular. With an area of 1.49 km², it is the largest mountain lake in the canton of Ticino. Its history is also closely linked to hydropower: since the first dam was built in 1917, its water has been used to generate electricity. This use plays a vital role in the Leventina Valley. The landscape and the history of energy are therefore two distinct, yet interconnected, ways of looking at the lake.

Educational Trail and Group Activities

The educational trail at Lake Ritom starts at the dam and follows a flat path along the left-hand slope of the valley through Val Piora to the Centro Biologia Alpina. Along the way, it provides historical and natural history information. If you are interested in both, you can use the trail as a thread through the landscape: the hydraulic structure marks the start, while the Centro is the endpoint. Trail conditions may vary by season.

The Centro Biologia Alpina offers groups and school classes a guided walk along the educational trail, including a laboratory visit. The full programme is estimated to take about three to four hours. This is a different time frame from the twelve-minute railway journey and helps you plan the two activities separately. If you are considering a group walk, check availability in advance.

Hydropower and Architectural History

Next to the lower station of the Ritom funicular stands the historic 1921 building that houses the Ritom hydroelectric power station. The facility includes four Pelton turbines; its total nominal flow rate is 6.7 m³/s and its installed capacity is 44 MW. Guided tours of the power station are organised for groups. If you are planning a tour, check availability beforehand.

Piotta’s buildings also tell the story of different uses and architectural styles. Along the cantonal road are well-preserved Case del Gottardo dating from the 17th century. The Filarmonia Piotta is a low-rise building with a flat roof that was formerly used as a Coop store. Piotta is also home to a low-rise building with a pitched roof belonging to the social dairy and cheese factory. Since 2011, the Ritom funicular has been listed in the Swiss inventory of cableways considered technical monuments and part of the country’s cultural heritage.

Understanding the Seasons and Climate

For a broad seasonal overview, the 1991–2020 climate normals provide a useful guide: the annual mean temperature in Piotta is 8.1 °C. January is the coldest month at −1.2 °C, while July is the warmest at 17.7 °C. On average, there are about 121 frost days and 20 ice days per year. These figures help put the seasons in context; conditions on the educational trail may vary seasonally.
