Neudorf offers a wide range of starting points for planning a trip: the parish church’s documented history dates back to 1026, while a hiking route starts in Neudorf and leads to Sursee. Gormund pilgrimage chapel and the Vogelmoos nature reserve add to the area’s cultural and natural appeal.
Neudorf Parish Church and Pilgrimage Tradition
Neudorf Parish Church is already mentioned as St. Agatha’s Church in the 1026 deed of donation to the monastery of Münster. The present-day parish church dates from the second half of the 17th century. Neudorf Church was consecrated on 10 May 1684 by Auxiliary Bishop Sigismund of Constance and restored between 1970 and 1972. It has rich, artistically valuable furnishings, and its choir stalls are among the finest in rural Swiss churches.
Bells are also part of the village’s history: 15 bells were cast in Neudorf in 1637. The oldest bell still in use in the church’s bell tower dates from the 11th century. Neudorf was once a well-known pilgrimage site. Once a year, eleven neighboring communities made a pilgrimage to St. Agatha in Neudorf. This pilgrimage is part of the village’s religious history.
Gormund: Chapel on a Moraine Hill
Gormund pilgrimage chapel stands on a moraine hill visible from far away. The oldest confirmed documentary reference to the chapel is a letter of consecration from 1509, issued by the Auxiliary Bishop of Constance. The chapel’s rich artistic furnishings were made possible by donations from the canons of Beromünster Abbey and the “Maria Mitleiden” and “St. Wendelin” confraternities. The chapel also hosts festive occasions such as weddings and baptisms. Arrangements may need to be made in advance for specific events.
Vogelmoos and Neudorf Forest
The Vogelmoos nature reserve on the Erlosen covers just under 80,000 square meters of land and forest. It is a nationally significant amphibian spawning ground. The area’s size, its role as an amphibian habitat, and its protected status are all important.
Neudorf Forest has several barbecue spots, benches for resting, and various trails for jogging or cycling. The nature areas offer different things: Vogelmoos is a nature reserve of particular importance as an amphibian spawning ground, while the forest is a place for barbecue spots, rest areas, and trails for exercise. Local conditions may apply when using these facilities.
Hiking Route to Sursee
A hiking route of around 13 kilometers leads from Neudorf via Römerhof, Wiholz, Wiholzmatte, Beromünster, and Mariazell to Sursee. The walk takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes. The distance and duration provide a specific guide for planning this tour; both figures are approximate. The Neudorf airfield, Beromünster Abbey, and Beromünster Castle Museum make worthwhile detours along the route.
Scenic flights and trial flights are offered from Lucerne-Beromünster Airport in Neudorf. Since availability and operating conditions may change, check in advance. In the Michelsamt region, walking and hiking trails lead through fields and forests, through the Schlifitobel, over the Schanz and Erlosen, through the Chüe- and Chegelwald, and into the Winonholz.
