Church art and a pond landscape give Hildisrieden two distinctive ways to explore. The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary combines neo-Gothic architecture with a colourful choir window; the “The Alps Within Reach” route leads through Tellewald. Local chapels, hiking and cycling trails, and a direct bus connection to Lucerne complete the picture. When choosing where to stay, it helps to decide in advance whether sacred art, the landscape or a trip to Lucerne should be the main focus.

Church Art and Chapels

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was consecrated in 1904. A spacious hall church in the neo-Gothic style, it is richly decorated with painted ornamentation. The choir features a large colourful window by Aloys Balmer depicting the family tree of Jesus. The year of construction provides a historical reference point; the architecture and furnishings prompt other questions: How is the space designed, and what subject does the window depict? This brings together the history of the church building and a specific example of religious art.

The local chapels also have their own distinctive features. They include the Chapel of St. Margaret in Ohmelinge, the Chapel of St. Mary in Schopfe, and the Chapel of St. Anthony in Traselinge. St. Mary’s is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Wendelin; its small early Baroque altar houses a High Gothic Madonna from the second half of the 14th century. A different date is significant for the Chapel of St. Anthony: it was consecrated on 13 June 2002. As a recurring tradition, the St. Anthony’s fair is celebrated on a Sunday around 13 June with a festive church service at 10 a.m. If you are planning your visit around the fair, check the specific event date.

The historical dates span from the artwork from the second half of the 14th century to the consecration of the parish church in 1904 and that of the Chapel of St. Anthony in 2002. This creates a clear contrast in terms of what to focus on: the church highlights architecture and painted decoration, while St. Mary’s features the Madonna in its small early Baroque altar.

Pond Landscape and Trails

The “The Alps Within Reach” route starts at the Hildisrieden/Dorf bus stop and leads through the idyllic pond landscape in Tellewald. The landscape provides a habitat for various amphibians and insects. There are also well-maintained hiking and cycling trails around Hildisrieden. While the route has a specific starting point, the surrounding trails offer further opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Regional Destinations and Getting There

Hildisrieden is located in the Central Swiss Plateau of the canton of Lucerne, between Lake Sempach and Lake Baldegg. Historical and cultural destinations in the surrounding area include the town gate of Sempach and the old town of Sursee. There is also a picnic area near Lake Sempach, suitable for family leisure and relaxation.

Lucerne can be reached directly from Hildisrieden by bus every half hour, in around 30 minutes. Check the timetable before travelling, as transport details may change. This makes it possible to include Lucerne as a day-trip destination and weigh it against local cultural and landscape attractions.
