Beromünster combines a remarkable collegiate history with printing art, historic collections and trails through the surrounding area. This offers a range of options when choosing what to focus on: you can explore the collegiate district and its books, or complement its cultural history with guided tours and hikes.

Collegiate District and Printing History

The Collegiate Church of St. Michael is a Romanesque columned basilica dating from 1036, with a crypt and richly decorated choir stalls. Together with the provost’s residence, the sacristan’s house, the collegiate theatre, and around 30 canons’ residences and prebendal houses, it forms a collegiate district that has grown over centuries. Its buildings and varied functions make the complex a total work of architectural art.

The collections also tell stories spanning long periods: the collegiate treasury contains liturgical objects dating back more than 1,300 years. The collegiate library preserves numerous medieval manuscripts from the 11th to the 15th century. It is also home to the oldest dated incunable in Switzerland, printed in Beromünster in 1470. Anyone interested in early book history will find a tangible link here between the town and the development of printing.

Residential Tower, Collections and Culture

The Beromünster Castle Museum is housed in an 11th-century residential tower; the museum includes a reconstructed printer’s workshop. The Haus zum Dolder offers another perspective on the town’s history: it served as a doctor’s house for more than 100 years. Three generations of country doctors built up a wide-ranging collection there.

Another chapter is linked to the former regional radio station. Its former buildings were converted into the KKLB Centre for Art and Culture, with exhibition spaces and studios; the broadcasting facilities were transformed into a total work of art. More than 100 artists have left their mark there. If you would like to include current exhibitions in your plans, check them separately before your visit.

Compare Hikes and Trails

For a longer hike, one route leads from Beromünster via Witwil, St. Wendel, Waldhuus, Vogelmoos and Älmenringen to Hildisrieden. It is listed as 10 kilometres long, with a walking time of 3 hours 50 minutes; a break at the Vogelmoos pond is recommended. A second route connects Beromünster with Sursee via Waldi, Grüt and Schenkon. It is listed as 9 kilometres long, with a walking time of 2 hours 20 minutes. The two suggestions can therefore be compared based on their stated distances and walking times.

The Wyna Trail connects Beromünster with Menziken and Gunzwil. Its marked routes are 2 to 10 kilometres long; information boards cover running, walking and Nordic walking. The Herzschlaufe Seetal is on a different scale: this 120-kilometre circular route runs from Eschenbach LU via Beromünster to Lenzburg AG and back. If you plan to cycle this route, check the trail conditions before setting off.

The wider Michelsamt region also offers footpaths and hiking trails, for example to Schlifitobel, over the Schanz and Erlosen, through the Chüe and Chegel forests, and to Winonholz and through fields and woods. Near Gunzwil, a circular trail leads via Bogetenhof, Rickenbach and Kagiswil back to Gunzwil; along the way, there are views of the Alpine range. The forest cathedral in Schlössliwäldli offers a different experience: it is an originally Baroque park with avenues of hornbeams and horse chestnuts.

Guided Tours, Traditions and Regional Tasting

The Beromünster town tour visits carefully restored and partly protected buildings dating from several centuries. It is offered year-round by appointment; check the booking details before your visit. During a tour of the Collegiate Church of St. Michael, visitors can see the choir, choir stalls, crypt, sacristies and treasury chambers. Advance registration is required. The individually bookable “Us em Näihchäschtli” tour visits five locations and shares the stories of five historic women. Check its availability before your trip.

The religious traditions include the Beromünster Ascension Day procession, held on foot and horseback on Ascension Day. The foot pilgrimage route is 18 kilometres long and is travelled by thousands of participants. More than 500 years old, the procession is also an expression of deeply rooted popular piety.

For a culinary addition, Chääsbox in Beromünster offers cheese specialities, with various varieties available to taste on site. The selection may change. Alongside the historical and scenic highlights, you can therefore also enjoy a specific local treat.
