Ruswil combines a distinctive historic village center with moors, ponds and hiking destinations in a pre-Alpine hilly landscape. You can plan your stay around architecture, nature watching or outdoor activities. For planning, there are routes with different approximate walking times, bus connections during peak hours and a Nextbike service.
Architecture in the Village Center
The parish church of St. Mauritius is a monumental Baroque building on a hillside terrace. Niklaus and Jakob Putschert built it in 1781–83. At the foot of the slope is the densely built village center, with homes, shops and inns dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The main square has a small-town feel; late-classical residential and commercial buildings stand around the Mauritius Fountain, which was renovated in 1955.
Other buildings reflect different eras and architectural styles: the late-classical mortuary chapel was built in 1843 and has a portico with Tuscan columns. The rectory is a stately masonry building with a hipped roof. It was built between 1635 and 1655 and restored in 1983–85. The historic Rössli inn is also part of the village’s history; it was first mentioned in 1575.
The Lucerne Chapel Trail links history and culture along an old country road, parts of which date back to Roman times. In total, it leads to 17 churches and chapels. Various farm shops along the trail offer local products for a snack and refreshments. This is a way to combine architecture with a walk that also offers a glimpse of local produce.
Moorland Landscapes, Ponds and Nature Watching
Rüediswilermoos lies between Ruswil and Rüediswil; its broad agricultural areas extend toward the Rottal valley. Together with Ämmehoger and Stäubliggrabe, it is designated as a landscape protection zone. Forenmoos in Sigiger Forest is also notable: it is a raised bog listed in federal inventories.
Lake Soppensee lies on the border of the municipalities of Ruswil, Buttisholz and Menznau and was formed after the last Ice Age. Prehistoric finds indicate that people lived here around 10,000 years ago. The lakeshore is covered by a cantonal protection ordinance. The areas around Lake Soppensee and Rüediswilermoos are popular destinations for outings.
Wildlife is the focus at the Stäublig pond landscape: it provides breeding grounds for numerous common frogs, common toads and smooth newts. On sunny, windless days, up to ten different dragonfly species can be observed there. The Schorenhüsli biotope provides a habitat for amphibians in particular, with stone piles, ponds and brush piles.
The plant habitats also differ considerably. Näb de Flue is a very steep, south-facing semi-dry grassland. Its typical plants include upright brome, quaking grass, restharrow, milkwort and wild thyme; flowering varies by season. Bränte is a nature reserve of local importance. Among other things, visitors can see bellflowers, perforate St John’s-wort and centaury, as well as the wall brown and burnet moth butterflies and the two-striped green-eyed damselfly. Flowering and wildlife sightings are seasonal.
Hikes to Suit Your Available Time
An overview covers 14 local hikes that explore the municipality in every direction. For a shorter time slot, it lists around 1 hour and 48 minutes for the hike through Rüediswilermoos, following in the footsteps of peat cutters, and around 1 hour and 56 minutes to the Bielbach Falls. The route to Gauchsrüti, described as an orchid hike, takes around 2 hours and 19 minutes; the hike to the Foremoos raised bog takes around 2 hours and 37 minutes.
With a stated distance of 5 kilometers and an approximate duration of 2 hours and 31 minutes, “Into the Wild South” is another option. The hike to Lake Soppensee is 9.7 kilometers long and takes around 3 hours and 6 minutes. Trail conditions can affect walking times on both routes; the times are estimates. Comparing them helps you plan a suitable block of time for a hike, without inferring its difficulty from its duration.
Leisure, Bicycles and Getting Here
Other leisure options include Badi Ruswil, an unheated outdoor swimming pool with a swimming pool. Golf-Rottal has a pitch-and-putt short-game course; the indoor mini-golf facility offers 18 challenging holes. For cycling enthusiasts, the Sursee–Sempach–Sursee scenic route climbs to Ruswil and offers an impressive panorama of the Alps.
The Nextbike system provides bicycles at five locations: Neumühli, Rüediswil–Migros, Wolfsmatt Sports Hall, Ruswil Center–Märtplatz and Meierhöfli. The number of stations may change as the mobility network develops. Nextbike bicycles can be rented via the app around the clock. During peak hours, the Ruswil–Lucerne service runs every 15 minutes; the connection to Wolhusen railway station runs every 30 minutes. Check the timetable for specific departure times.
Plan Your Stay and Hotel Search
The Rusmeler Märt market also offers a glimpse of local products. Sabrina Vogel sells bread and various baked goods there at every market. A group of women led by Halima Sheikhmouse sells traditional Syrian snacks to take away, available only at the Rusmeler Märt.
When choosing specific accommodation, check its location in relation to your plans. If you intend to use the bus connections, include departure times in your planning as well.
