Oberkirch is located right on Lake Sempach and very close to Sursee. Culture, lakeside trails and activities offer different ways to experience the town: when planning your trip, you can focus on a museum and distinctive architecture or include nature and leisure activities.
Museum and architecture in Oberkirch
The Oberkirch Museum of Culture and Local History displays its collection in a mill on the Sure, built around 1260. Around 5,000 exhibits provide insight into various aspects of everyday life in the past. On display are tools used by shoemakers, cabinetmakers, carpenters and bakers, as well as fishing equipment. An old post office counter with an extensive collection of accessories and a schoolroom round out the collection. The schoolroom commemorates Peter Bucher, who was a teacher, organist, choir director and journalist, and was connected to Oberkirch as an honorary citizen. Individual museum tours are available on request; the museum can be reached on foot or by bicycle.
St. Pankratius Parish Church offers a different architectural impression. Built between 1965 and 1967, it has been described as an unconventional central-plan building and a striking exposed-concrete structure. In Oberkirch, the historical collection and the much more recent church architecture thus offer different ways of exploring the town’s history.
The RAMSEIER Erlebniswelt is also part of the local cultural and excursion offerings. It is located at Schellenrain 2a, 6210 Sursee (Oberkirch), and features the multimedia show “A Sip of Nature.” The Erlebniswelt is accessible and suitable for wheelchairs, strollers and walkers.
The Sure, Lake Sempach and green trails
The Surenweg is a walking trail along the Sure. The river provides a place to relax, and the trail combines the theme of water with a walk. The section of the Sempachersee-Moosweg that passes through Oberkirch also makes a distinctive feature of the landscape, with an extensive orchard along the way. Juchmoos in Oberkirch is one of the nature reserves around Lake Sempach.
If you are looking for a clearly defined jogging route, you’ll find the Haselwartwald Vita Parcours in Haselwartwald. The route is 2.26 kilometres long and has fifteen stations. It starts and ends at the northern forest entrance above the Scout Centre. The Haselwart Deer Park is also located above Oberkirch, and is home to a number of white deer. There is parking at the deer park, as well as a public transport connection.
Getting around by bicycle or e-rickshaw
The Lake Sempach cycling route includes a section between Oberkirch and Sempach. Along this section, the route follows paved paths close to the water and has no significant climbs. For flexible local travel, Oberkirch also has an automated Nextbike bicycle rental system, which is connected to train and bus services. The two options have different focuses: the circular route is a cycling route by the lake, while Nextbike is a local bicycle rental service with public transport connections.
Another option is an e-rickshaw, which can be rented at Hotel Hirschen in Oberkirch. It has room for three people: one driver and two passengers. If you plan to use this option, it’s best to check availability in advance.
Golf, vineyards and group activities
The scenic Golfpark Oberkirch offers a 6-hole course with par 22 and an 18-hole course with par 71. Practice facilities include a driving range, a pitching green and a putting green. You can book training sessions with golf professionals at the on-site Golf Academy.
At Haselrain, around 2,400 vines are cultivated across 50 ares. Weinbau Haselrain offers vineyard tours and tastings for groups of ten or more. At Alpakazeit Haselrain, on the Stocker family farm in Oberkirch, you can meet three alpacas. The activities include an alpaca walk, which can be combined with a tasting of regional wines or an aperitif in the alpaca pasture. Families can enjoy activities including children’s birthday parties, story time and exploring nature together.
This leaves you free to put together the activities that suit your trip, without having to combine them into a fixed itinerary.
