Neuenkirch combines a history of pilgrimage and themed trails with natural attractions such as forests, ponds and a waterfall. During your stay, you can focus on churches and chapels or choose a trail with a particular story to follow: the Niklaus Wolf Trail explores the life of Niklaus Wolf, while the Bible Trail features biblical stories. Golf is also available, with a 9-hole course.
Churches, Pilgrimage and Themed Trails
The parish church of St. Ulrich was rebuilt in the late Baroque style in 1765. It was extended and rebuilt in 1939; its most recent complete renovation took place in 1993. Below the parish church is the Niklaus Wolf pilgrimage chapel, dedicated to Niklaus Wolf of Rippertschwand. His grave is inside the chapel, which is visited daily by worshippers from across Switzerland and from neighbouring areas abroad. Its history goes back further: the present-day chapel developed from a lower church, where Niklaus Wolf’s remains were reinterred in 1952. It was named the Father Wolf Grave Chapel in 1966 and has been known as a pilgrimage chapel since 1982.
The Niklaus Wolf Trail is a circular route around Rippertschwand. It starts at the pilgrimage chapel and passes five stations. These tell the story of Niklaus Wolf’s life and invite visitors to reflect on their own lives. The trail takes about an hour and is also suitable for school classes. Every year on the first Sunday in September, the faith festival in honour of Niklaus Wolf takes place in the adjoining church square. If you would like to attend, check the exact date in advance.
The Neuenkirch Bible Trail offers a different theme. It leads through peaceful countryside and invites visitors to find parallels between biblical stories and their own life experiences. The signposted trail starts and ends at the Father Wolf Chapel below the parish church. It also includes a puzzle and is suitable for school classes. Unlike the Niklaus Wolf Trail, it focuses on biblical stories and personal life experiences.
Adelwil Chapel developed into a pilgrimage chapel, where people came to pray about concerns both small and great. The present-day chapel was built between 1610 and 1618. Between 1624 and 1634, Lucerne painter Kaspar Meglinger created a series of paintings for it depicting the lives of Saints Gallus and Einbeth. A joint open-air church service for the parishes of Sempach and Neuenkirch is held at the chapel every year on a Sunday in late August. Check the exact date locally.
For a broader cultural experience, you can follow the Lucerne Chapel Trail. It starts at HellbĂĽhl parish church in the municipality of Neuenkirch and runs through the Rottal via Ruswil, Buttisholz and Grosswangen to Ettiswil. The route links 17 churches and chapels in total and is considered a historical and cultural experience.
Wartensee Castle is also part of the municipality’s history: in the Middle Ages, its predecessor building served as the residence of a Habsburg lake bailiff. He controlled shipping between Sursee and Sempach. Today, Wartensee Castle houses various artists’ studios.
Forest, Ponds and Other Activities
ChĂĽserain Forest is the largest forest in the municipality. Several nature ponds nearby provide habitats for numerous animals and plants. The rare bog arum (Calla palustris) has its only natural site in Switzerland in ChĂĽsenrain Forest. Teufenweiher nature pond is considered an idyllic place of tranquillity. These locations offer a different focus from the churches and pilgrimage trails: here, the forest and pond landscapes take centre stage.
A forest path leads from the LippenrĂĽti neighbourhood to a waterfall. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before your visit. All three villages in Neuenkirch also have meeting places with fire pits, wooden tables and benches. They can be used without a reservation; check the condition of the relevant facilities before your visit.
Golf Rastenmoos in Neuenkirch offers a 9-hole course, a driving range, a pitching green and a putting green. As facilities can change, it is advisable to check current details before your visit. Neuenkirch therefore offers a range of options for planning your stay: historical and religious themed trails, nature attractions or golf.
