Unterkulm lies in the central Wynental valley, between wooded ridges. Forests, the church, industrial history and market life each add a different dimension to a stay. From the circular trail through Ischlag Forest to the historic layers of the Reformed Church, there are various themes to explore.
Forest and the Wynental Valley
The municipality covers 888 hectares, of which 309 hectares are forested. One way to get to know the forest better is to follow the Unterkulm Forest Nature Trail. The circular trail is about 2.5 kilometres long; along the way, you can observe around 80 different trees and shrubs as they grow. The best place to start the walk is above the Mittleres Wynental swimming pool, at the information board in Ischlag Forest. Benches offer places to rest, and there are also views of Unterkulm.
The Mittleres Wynental swimming pool is at the edge of the forest on Unterkulm’s eastern valley side, near the municipal boundary with Teufenthal. It is run by the municipalities of Unterkulm, Oberkulm and Teufenthal. From the Unterkulm Nord WSB stop, it is about a ten-minute walk. If you use this estimate for planning, bear in mind that route conditions and walking times can change.
Church and Industrial History
Unterkulm’s settlement history dates back to 1045. That year, Columbaria—the name of the former Roman estate, translated as “dove farm”—first appeared as a village and settlement name. Another historical milestone followed in 1295, when the village split into the politically independent municipalities of Oberkulm and Unterkulm.
The Reformed Church also preserves traces of different eras. The masonry walls of the first identifiable place of worship, dating from the 12th century, have been preserved in the present-day nave. The nave also contains a chancel painting from the early 14th century. It came to light again during the extensive restoration of 1967/68. The masonry and painting thus represent two distinct historical layers within the church interior.
Another part of the area’s history is linked to the KWC site. The foundry building, with its mechanical workshops dating from 1896, is one of the oldest parts of the KWC fittings factory’s industrial complex. The KWC Museum is housed in the foundry building.
Markets and Local Offerings
Around 50 to 60 market traders take part in Unterkulm’s market days, offering a varied selection; the number may change. The May market also features a Luna Park for younger visitors. The annual programme may vary, so if you are planning a trip, check the specific dates in advance.
The Chomer-Samschtig-Märt has also been held since 2012. Regional vendors and clubs in particular sell their products there at Zentrumsplatz. The different markets each have their own character: the market days offer a varied selection, while the Chomer-Samschtig-Märt focuses on the regional vendors and clubs. You can take these differences into account when planning your trip, alongside the nature and history attractions.
