On the Teufenthal Adventure Trail, an old legend is divided into seven parts: signs along the trail tell the story of Liebegg and Trostburg castles. There are also seven marble runs. The trail is easy to walk and can be used with an all-terrain stroller. If you enjoy combining excursions with a specific story, this combination offers a clear point of reference: you can follow the story signs and also experience the seven runs as a distinctive feature of the route.
The Wyna, the uplands and hiking trails
The Wyna, the Moos and the adjacent hills are among the landscapes of cantonal importance. The Wyna is 32 kilometres long and flows through the cantons of Lucerne and Aargau. Its banks, lined with hedgerows, now form an important nature reserve. The river, Moos and hills each reveal a different aspect of the landscape that defines the Kulm district.
The Stierenberg (872 m), Hochwacht (788 m) and Homberg (787 m) are among the higher areas in the Kulm district, offering hiking opportunities and panoramic views. The aargauSĂĽd high-altitude trail runs in eight varied stages through scenic uplands, quiet forests and charming villages along the Wynental valley. The views from the stages extend from the Jura across the Central Plateau to the Alps. Thanks to good public transport connections, you can plan them flexibly and enjoy them as day hikes.
One stage of the high-altitude trail listed under the Kulm district runs from Dürrenäsch to Teufenthal, passing Liebegg Castle and the Gränichen sandstone caves. It ends at Teufenthal railway station. Routes may change, so check the latest route information before setting out. The Seetalbahn and Wynentalbahn railways are options for travelling to Homberg. You can also combine your trip with a scheduled boat service on Lake Hallwil. If you plan to use these connections, it is worth checking the latest timetables.
Technology and cultural history
The Menziken sawmill was built by Jakob Merz in 1801 and is a listed building. Its features include an undershot waterwheel and a single-blade saw with an output of about 4 kW. The Tobacco Museum in Menziken also explores one aspect of the Wynental valley’s history: tobacco cultivation and cigar production. On display are machines, tools and numerous objects related to the production of cigars and cigarillos. Packaging, labels and advertising materials add to the collections and show other aspects of this branch of production.
The Gontenschwil Village Museum is housed in a former rectory dating from 1592. In Beinwil am See, the Reformed Church combines architecture and art: Zurich architect Meili designed it in 1935 and built it according to his plans. Images by Beinwil artists Paul Eichenberger and Eugen Maurer are displayed on the north side of the nave. The church is now protected as a cantonal heritage site and is accessible without steps through the side door. Check the latest access information before visiting.
Seasonal activities and trip planning
The Oberwynental artificial ice rink offers public skating, recreational ice hockey and figure skating; skates are available to rent. The offer is seasonal, so check the operating dates before your trip. The lido at Beinwil am See is open for swimming from May to September. Check the specific opening days before your visit.
Cycling tours are another way to explore the region. According to the tour descriptions, the tours listed for the Kulm district and its surroundings are suitable for beginners, intermediate cyclists and experts. So, in addition to the hiking stages, there are cycling options for different experience levels, without implying any specific route or level of difficulty for an individual tour.
