A jungle trail through forest regeneration, Roman traces near Brugg and hiking trails ranging from easy walks to multi-day stages: Aargau combines natural and cultural attractions with a variety of ways to enjoy a stay. Which aspects you focus on depends on whether you prefer hiking, watching wildlife or exploring history at specific sites.

Forests, River Floodplains and Nature Watching

The “Thiersteinberg-Homberg-Horn” natural forest reserve covers 165 hectares and is the largest contiguous forest reserve in the canton of Aargau. Its “jungle trail” passes through forest regeneration following the once-in-a-century storm “Lothar” and through a yew forest with trees over 100 years old. The trail thus connects the visible development of the forest with a very old stand of trees.

Protected landscapes also shape the canton along its rivers: the Aargau Floodplain Protection Park comprises eight floodplain protection areas along Aargau’s rivers. The floodplains at Klingnau Reservoir provide food and shelter for around 350 bird species, as well as a resting place on their journeys. In Rottenschwil, the Stille Reuss is Switzerland’s best-preserved river oxbow. There, you can combine long walks with watching insects, amphibians and birds.

Another regional point of reference for nature excursions is the Aargau Jura Park, a regional nature park of national importance. Its area encompasses the hilly landscape of the Folded and Tabular Jura between Aarau, Brugg, Laufenburg and Rheinfelden. If you are planning a route in the park, check the park boundaries in advance.

Hikes from Easy to More Challenging

Hiking conditions vary across the canton: the Lower Aare Valley offers easy, flat walks, while more challenging routes can also be found in the north of the region. Well-marked trails pass through varied landscapes and offer different types of routes. When planning, it is therefore helpful to decide in advance how long you want to hike and to check current trail conditions.

The Fricktal High Trail runs for over 60 kilometres through the Fricktal, from Rheinfelden to the Mettau Valley. The route can be completed in stages as day trips or as part of a multi-day hiking holiday. Another hike leads from Schinznach-Dorf to Thalheim, linking the vineyard educational trail, the Roman vineyard and the ruins of Schenkenberg Castle. At Lake Hallwil, a route runs from Hallwyl Castle near Seengen along the lakeshore to Mosen. These examples offer different highlights: one is a long-distance route completed in stages, while the other combines viticulture, Roman history and castle ruins on a single hike.

Roman History and Castles

Around 2,000 years ago, the area around Brugg/Windisch was home to Switzerland’s only Roman legionary camp. The Vindonissa Legionary Trail offers tours, Roman-style overnight stays, guided tours and events; it operates seasonally, so you should check the current dates before travelling. The visit also includes Switzerland’s oldest amphitheatre. The Vindonissa Museum displays the largest collection of Roman writing tablets; the Roman garden beside the museum is unique in Switzerland in terms of its scale.

Hallwyl Castle is located in the Lake Hallwil nature reserve. The permanent exhibition explores the architectural and family history of the noble von Hallwyl family. The castle regularly hosts events and public guided tours; checking the current calendar can help with planning. Lenzburg Castle is one of Switzerland’s most significant hilltop castles.

Wildegg Castle offers gardens and a museum featuring talking castle residents who take visitors back to the Baroque era. Vines have been cultivated and wine produced there for more than 400 years; the vineyard is still actively farmed. Alongside Roman history and castles, Baroque culture and viticulture are therefore also distinct themes to choose from for your trip.

Choose Accommodation to Match Your Trip

A multi-day hike such as the Fricktal High Trail involves different planning considerations than a stay focused on museum visits, guided tours or nature watching. Tailor your search to the activities you want to focus on. If you plan to hike, check current trail conditions; for seasonal attractions and regular guided tours, it is advisable to check the relevant dates.
