Leimbach combines the landscape of the upper Wynental with clearly defined destinations for a day out: walking paths, family-friendly routes and the thatched-roof house on Seeberg. The village is in the Kulm district of the canton of Aargau, about 15 kilometres south of Aarau. Its quiet, rural character and countryside surroundings make it a good fit for a trip focused on paths and local history.
Leimbach lies in a recess of the northern terminal moraine in the Wynental. At the edge of the Wyna, the village stretches across gentle hills, fields and forests. This gives the landscape a dimension beyond the individual routes: you can discover Leimbach through both its location and surroundings and specific trail destinations. The natural surroundings invite you to go for walks and bike rides; for more detailed planning, you can choose from the described circular and themed trails, among others.
Local History and the Thatched-Roof House
The place name is already recorded in its present-day spelling in the Habsburg Urbar of 1300. It derives from the Old High German «Leimbah» and means «clay stream». The village’s economic history also tells a story of change: in the 18th and 19th centuries, cotton and tobacco processing were part of the local cottage industry; a sheet-metal and wire factory was added in the 1920s.
A distinctive destination for exploring local architecture and village history is the thatched-roof house on Seeberg above Leimbach. Also known as the Straw House or Aargau House, it is the oldest type of house known in Aargau. The year 1783 is inscribed in the beam above the barn entrance. The house has been converted into a small museum: an Aargau plough, wooden harrows and household items illustrate the village’s former way of life. A visit to the house can thus be combined with an interest in rural architecture and historical everyday life, without reducing the building’s history to its construction date. The forest lodge on Seeberg also has room for 20 to 25 people.
Trails for Different Time Budgets
The trails’ short duration estimates make it easy to compare them. The stroller-friendly Wilma Trail is about 1.2 kilometres long, takes around 20 minutes and passes three varied stations. The Wili Trail is a longer alternative: it is about 4.6 kilometres long, takes around two hours and includes eleven stations and several fire pits. It is suitable for children from around kindergarten age, but is not stroller-friendly. The two names therefore refer to trails with different distances and planning requirements.
For a hike with published distance and elevation figures, consider the Leimbach Bench Trail. It starts at Leimbach railway station, is about 4.1 kilometres long and involves approximately 220 metres of ascent and descent. The stated duration is about one hour and 20 minutes; the technical difficulty and fitness levels are rated easy. By comparison, the Wilma Trail is considerably shorter, while the Wili Trail takes more time, at around two hours. These details can help you choose a suitable time frame for your plans without treating the three trails as equivalent.
The Homberg Gnome Trail passes through the municipalities of Reinach and Leimbach. It offers an outdoor experience for all ages, with playful stations, little surprises and beautiful views, and was officially opened on 23 May 2026. The mountain-bike route «Up to Homberg» offers another, differently oriented connection to the thatched-roof house: on the descent, it passes by the house. This route thus links the trail experience and cultural destination geographically, while the Bench Trail and the two children’s trails each have their own route details and focus.
