In Gontenschwil, village history, art and a landscape shaped by glacial traces offer different highlights to discover during a stay. The village museum is housed in a former vicarage dating from 1592; Galerie Schlössli has been in existence since 1985 and has hosted more than 150 exhibitions. The landscape includes the Wyna, the Moos and the neighbouring hills. The village’s character thus spans historic buildings and industrial history to an important natural area.

Cultural history in the village

The village museum connects Gontenschwil’s local history with a former vicarage dating from 1592. Groups can arrange visits by calling 062 773 17 48; advance registration is required. Galerie Schlössli offers another cultural point of interest: it has been in Gontenschwil since 1985 and has hosted more than 150 exhibitions. At the museum, the historic building is the tangible link; at the gallery, it is the long exhibition history.

Gontenschwil’s industrial past is also part of its history. The disused Lochmühle in Hinterdorf is considered the birthplace of the aluminium industry in the region. Cotton processing also shaped the village economy in the 18th and 19th centuries. After the collapse of the textile industry, almost 30 per cent of residents left by 1900, many of them for overseas. Gontenschwil’s history is also linked to the Counts of Lenzburg and Kyburg, the Habsburgs and the Bernese Aargau.

Another historical trace is the mineral and healing spring, discovered in 1640. Many patients subsequently sought relief from their ailments at Bad Schwarzenberg; mineral water was bottled there until 1990.

Glacial traces and natural areas

Gontenschwil lies in the upper Wynental and borders the canton of Lucerne. During the WĂĽrm glaciation around 15,000 years ago, the Reuss Glacier advanced as far as the area and shaped the landscape, leaving two lateral moraines and a prominent terminal moraine across the valley.

According to the cantonal structure plan, the Wyna, the Moos and the neighbouring hills are landscapes of cantonal importance. The Wyna and its hedge-lined banks are now an important nature reserve. This broad landscape classification is therefore distinct from the specifically designated protected area along the Wyna.

At the Wynaknie and along the terminal moraine, there are renaturalised areas with ponds, pools, flood hollows, extensively managed meadows and ruderal areas. They provide refuge for amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish and insects. With a little luck, you can spot kingfishers, reed warblers and active beavers along the Wyna.

Activities and events

An idyllic Vitaparcours fitness trail is located in the Brünnelichrüz / Cholerain area. Children’s attractions in Gontenschwil include a large shipwreck, a slide and various swings.
