A former granary, a river and changing exhibitions come together at Rian. The museum is housed in a building constructed using half-timbered techniques in 1865, originally used as a granary. On the Ätran, downstream from Tullbron, it presents three new exhibitions each year. The changing themes range from industrial design to handicrafts. Exhibition tours, lectures, workshops and themed city tours are also part of the programme. What is taking place during your trip may change; check the latest dates before your visit.
The Old Town and architectural history
In Gamla Stan, crooked, winding wooden houses and a medieval church define the scene. S:t Laurentii Church is considered Falkenberg’s oldest building and has medieval origins. Inside, you’ll find 16th-century wall paintings and 18th-century ceiling paintings. Tullbron adds another era to this historic perspective: it was built between 1756 and 1761 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1984.
Those who want to explore the city’s history beyond individual buildings will find a broad timeline at the Falkenbergs Hembygdsmuseum: its presentation spans from prehistory to the early 20th century. Other collections focus on narrower subjects. The Monark Museum displays products designed by Monark from 1908 to the present day. These include bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles from Monark’s heyday, as well as Monark radios and televisions; original Monark and Crescent exhibits and newspaper advertisements are also on display. The Toveks Bilmuseum, which moved to Falkenberg in 2024, features more than 80 vehicles from several eras. The collection also includes Sweden’s only privately owned Audi F1 car.
The Ätran, fishing and riverside paths
The Ätran flows through Ätradalen and empties into the Kattegat in central Falkenberg. Hertingforsen reveals another connection between river and sea: thanks to the restoration, migratory fish such as salmon, sea trout, eel and lamprey can live and reproduce in the Ätran, and move between the river and the sea. A footbridge and cycle bridge crosses Hertingforsen, making it possible to explore the area from both sides.
Falkenberg’s salmon fishing area stretches from Hertingforsen to Hålan and is divided into three sections. It is two kilometres long in total; you can walk between the fishing spots. Spinning, fly-fishing and traditional shrimp fishing are permitted. The rules may change seasonally, so check the current fishing regulations in advance. This lets you plan the layout of the area and the permitted methods separately.
Coastal route, beach and more things to do
The Falkenberg section of the Kattegattleden runs from Morup in the north to Steninge in the south. The route is mostly close to the coast and traffic-free. Temporary detours may be in place, so check the latest route information before setting out on a cycling trip. Skrea Beach offers another way to enjoy the coast: the sandy beach is two kilometres long and can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the beach promenades.
Vallarna Park has a playground, parkour, an adventure course, a hobby horse track and a mini zoo. The sea sauna run by Falkenbergs Kallbadsvänner is at Bacchus väg 1, right by the sea. It is open to members and the general public throughout the year. If you’re planning a visit, check before your trip whether a booking slot is available.
You can also plan your journey using public transport: Ă–resundstĂĄg trains stop at Falkenberg Station on their way north or south. Buses serving the town and surrounding area run from the bus station on Holgersgatan. Timetables and routes may change; check the latest connections before your trip.
The Falkenbergs Matdagar Roadtrip at Easter is a seasonal opportunity to get to know food producers. Around 30 businesses open their own visitor destinations as part of the event. Dates and participating businesses may change from one edition to the next, so it’s worth checking the latest information for each event.
