The landscape around Gällared is predominantly forested, with open agricultural land mainly in the valleys. Together with a medieval church site and trails of varying lengths, this offers a clear blend of nature and cultural heritage. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can choose where to stay based on whether you want to focus on a longer loop, short nature trails or local history.

Forest landscape and trails

The 12-kilometre Ödemarksstigen is a loop in the highlands between Okome and Gällared, connecting four nature reserves. As a loop, it differs from a route with separate outward and return legs. Its length and the nature reserves it connects give you specific points to consider when planning this nature route as part of your trip.

Another road route, Hallands vackraste väg, runs between Askome and Gällared. It has a different character from the loop. As road conditions can change, check them before making specific plans. The routes also differ in the places they connect: the Ödemarksstigen runs between Okome and Gällared, while Hallands vackraste väg runs between Askome and Gällared.

Church site, cemetery and local heritage museum

Gällared Church stands on an elevated medieval church site and was remodelled in 1831. These details refer to different historical aspects: the medieval date relates to the church site, while 1831 marks the remodelling of the church. The oldest gravestones in the cemetery date from the 17th century. The old church site, the history preserved in the gravestones and the later remodelling can therefore be understood as distinct points in time.

The old cemetery around Gällared Church is enclosed by a sturdy stone wall and several large maple trees. It lies along the road between Ullared and Ätran. A few hundred metres west of the church is Gamla Prästgården, which now serves as a local heritage museum.

Another piece of history came to light during restoration work in 2015: a tiny wooden box was discovered directly beneath the floorboards of a rural parish church in Gällared. The find adds an archaeological event to the building and cemetery history.

Yttra Berg: nature trails and museum

Nearby Yttra Berg offers a different focus as a place to explore nature and culture. It has four well-marked nature trails ranging from 1 to 2.5 kilometres in length. Compared with the 12-kilometre Ödemarksstigen, they are much shorter, making distance a practical criterion when choosing a route. The small museum features an exhibition about the area’s nature and culture, as well as the work involved in traditional farming. The trails and exhibition offer different ways to explore the nature and cultural heritage of Yttra Berg. As museum access details may change, check them before visiting.
