Halland’s character emerges from the contrast between coast and inland. As far north as the northern parts of Halmstad Municipality, long sandy beaches and dunes shape the coastal plain; farther north, the coast becomes more varied, with coastal meadows, cliffs, skerries and bays. To the east, naturally occurring coniferous and mixed forests lie alongside open marshland with a distinct wilderness character. These contrasts give a trip through Halland more than just one kind of scenery: you can explore coastal nature, forests and marshes as separate themes.

Forests, lakes and trails

A closer look inland leads to Ă…kulla bokskogar. The name brings together around ten similar nature reserves in one continuous area in Varberg Municipality. There are 20 lakes, which together account for approximately one fifth of the area. Nine largely interconnected walking trails offer a range of ways to explore the forest on foot. In winter, there are opportunities for cross-country skiing; in summer, there are several swimming spots. Conditions and facilities may vary by season. This means two distinctly different seasonal activities are available here: skiing in winter and swimming in summer.

At Haverdal Nature Reserve, you can swim, walk, jog and ride horses in a coastal dune landscape. A sand dune rises 36 metres above sea level and offers wide views across the reserve and its surroundings. Hökafältet offers a different experience: a 2.5-kilometre trail runs through the area and is particularly suitable for wheelchairs, walkers and pushchairs. There is also a birdwatching tower in the northern part of Hökafältet, at Lagaoset. The options range from spending time in a dune landscape to following a trail expressly described as suitable for mobility aids and pushchairs.

On foot or by bike

For longer hikes, the marked Hallandsleden currently runs for around 450 kilometres through inland Halland. Its eastern and western routes meet again in the Ă…kulla area. The trail passes through landscapes featuring old transport routes, ancient monuments, historic buildings and signposted sights. The route and division into sections are also closely coordinated with public transport, making it easier to get to and from the trail. Check current departure times before your trip.

Kattegattleden is Sweden’s first national cycle route and runs along the entire Halland coast. It offers 390 kilometres of cycling through a distinctive coastal landscape and is divided into eight sections. The difference from Hallandsleden is not just the mode of transport: Hallandsleden runs inland, while Kattegattleden follows the coast. This clear distinction can help you choose between an inland hiking route and a coastal cycling route.

Culture and regional discoveries

Tjolöholms slott is a cultural and historical setting unique in Sweden. The castle was designed in the Tudor style, with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement; the cultural landscape includes numerous stone-paved walking trails. In Åkulla, in the Toppbjär reserve, you’ll find the “Bexells talande stenar”: inscriptions carved into rocks and cliffs. Äskhult has four historic trails of different lengths, with stops exploring the history and cultural landscape of the area. Each trail offers a different way to discover this historic setting, from a different period or thematic perspective.

Several exhibitions run at the Hallands Konstmuseum in Halmstad at the same time; they are often based on the extensive collection of Halland art. The collection includes paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, crafts and architecture. Family activities include stories, challenging art puzzles and free creative activities in the studio. Exhibitions and visitor programmes may change. Varberg Fortress has also been gradually transformed into a place for cultural experiences and beautiful views.

Regional produce is also part of the Halland experience: farm shops offer fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, various meats, fish and other local products. At Ästad Vingård, tastings of organically grown wines from Halland are available. Next to the vineyard, ÄNG restaurant serves a Scandinavian tasting menu focused on local ingredients. Tasting options and menus may change; check ahead if you’re planning to include these experiences.
