The Puente de Piedra is an example of Renaissance civil architecture. Its riverbed has been dry since 1590, after the Río Alagón naturally changed course following a major flood. Coria brings together architectural history, archaeological evidence and a range of ways to spend time outdoors. These include the medieval street network, riverside paths, water sports and birdwatching. When planning your visit, you can focus on different themes: city history, nature or activities on the water.
Historic Centre and Architectural History
The Casco Histórico can be explored via an irregular medieval street network of lanes, squares and small plazas. Since 25 May 1993, it has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The routes through the historic centre therefore pass through a protected historic ensemble, whose fine-grained layout is one of its defining features.
The architecture also reflects different periods. The Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción combines Gothic-Plateresque architecture with Baroque additions; construction spanned the late 15th to the 18th century. The Castillo de los Duques de Alba is also a Bien de Interés Cultural monument. Its military design dates from the late 15th century and has an irregular pentagonal ground plan. The Murallas Romanas have 23 square towers and enclose a total perimeter of 1,065 metres.
The Museo de la Cárcel Real offers an archaeological perspective. Its exhibits cover Coria’s history from prehistory to the Middle Ages. A guided tour, the Paseo Guiado A Través de los Siglos, presents the city’s history as a journey through time, from prehistory and antiquity through the Middle Ages and the modern era to the present day. Check before your trip when the tour takes place.
Paths, Gardens and Activities on the Río Alagón
The Paseo del Camino Real follows a historic section of the Vía Dalmacia and connects the historic centre, via the Puente de Piedra, with the Paseo Fluvial de la Isla on the Río Alagón. Another route option is the Ruta de la Vía Dalmacia, a 5.5-kilometre linear out-and-back route. These details describe different routes; the connection through the historic centre and over the bridge is part of the Paseo del Camino Real.
The Parque Fluvial del Tamujal lies on the right bank of the Río Alagón, where the river flows through Coria. This natural area is intended for walking, leisure and relaxation. Riverside woodland, water sports and outdoor activities are among the features of the surroundings of the Paseo Fluvial de la Isla. The Jardín Botánico de Coria offers a different focus: covering 1.5 hectares, it contains a representative collection of Mediterranean forest flora. Coria is also considered a particularly good place for birdwatching in a natural setting.
The Descenso del Río Alagón is a non-competitive canoeing activity on the Río Alagón. The 18.8-kilometre route ends at the Puente de Hierro de Coria; check the dates before your trip. This distance should not be confused with the length of the Ruta de la Vía Dalmacia: it refers to a different activity and a different mode of transport.
Festivals and Seasonal Experiences
Events can also shape the focus of a stay. Coria Sabor Micológico is an annual tapas trail held in November, featuring mushroom dishes at local restaurants. Check the dates and participating restaurants in advance. FITCORIA, an international bull fair and a bullfighting fair with tourist, cultural and socioeconomic aspects, takes place in mid-March.
The Fiestas de San Juan take place every year from 23 to 29 June; the programme may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around these festivities, it is worth checking the programme for the year in question. Coria thus brings together different time spans and themes: the cathedral’s long construction period, the archaeological time span represented in the museum and fixed dates on the events calendar.
