Discover Santa Cruz De La Sierra through its very different landmarks: from prehistoric stone formations at Montaña Sagrada to a Late Gothic church portal and Roman stelae in the town. There is also a marked route in the Sierra and plains where you can observe various bird species. This gives you the chance to decide whether to focus your trip mainly on archaeology, architectural history, or the landscape.
Archaeological traces at Montaña Sagrada
The summit of Risco Grande, also known locally as Risco de San Gregorio, has Arab remains that lie above pre-Roman remains. Montaña Sagrada also includes megalithic features such as a menhir, a pseudo-dolmen, trilithons, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms. These terms refer to different types of stone structures and shapes; together, they give the landscape a distinctly archaeological character.
On the southern slope of Montaña Sagrada lies Tercer Risco, a prehistoric sanctuary. Its described features include footprints carved into the rock, cup marks, and anthropomorphic stone forms. This distinguishes the site from the megalithic features cited for Montaña Sagrada as a whole: at Tercer Risco, the focus is on the sanctuary and its specific forms. Physical access to archaeological sites can vary; check before planning your visit.
Buildings and Roman stelae in the town
The Iglesia de la Vera Cruz has a Late Gothic west portal dating from the late 15th century. Pointed archivolts, decorated capitals, and a stone cross define its design. At the Palacio, the façade preserves inscriptions and the coat of arms of the Chaves family; the building is partly used as a residence. These two examples show different traces on buildings, without requiring you to look for the same details in both places: here, the shape of a church portal; there, inscriptions and a family coat of arms.
Roman stelae can also be seen in two locations. Three are on the outer north wall of the parish church, and four more are in the Plaza Mayor. Another monument, the Verraco VettĂłn, stands on the outskirts of town on the road to Herguijuela.
For tourist information about Santa Cruz De La Sierra and the Sierra, visit the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn below the building in the Plaza Mayor. The center offers a free guided tour of its premises. As visitor services may change, check in advance whether the tour is currently available.
Routes, plains, and birdwatching
A marked route leads from the Convento de los Agustinos through stone-paved lanes, past channels carved into granite, and up the slope of the Sierra de Santa Cruz along paved paths. The route offers views of both the path’s architectural details and the climb through the Sierra. Trail conditions may change; check the current conditions before setting out.
Another regional feature is the Cañada Real: once used as a livestock trail, it is now largely no longer used for that purpose, while also serving as a section of one of the Caminos Mozárabes routes to Santiago, which passes through Trujillo. The plains toward Ibahernando, Ruanes, and Trujillo, with their grazing land and dry farming, are part of the ZEPA Llanos de Trujillo. Among the species that can be seen there are great bustard, little bustard, Montagu’s harrier, European roller, Thekla’s lark, and calandra lark. Their presence varies by season and is not constant; if you are planning a specialist visit, check current conservation or access guidance.
Ritual and cultural experiences
Noche de los Chozos is a local ritual held every year on September 13, after dark, in the Plaza Mayor and surrounding areas. It offers a different way to experience local culture from the lasting archaeological and architectural landmarks. If you would like to attend, check the dates before your trip.
Vettonia Rutas Culturales offers cultural tours through Montaña Sagrada and the town, with a focus on nature, archaeology, and local history. This differs from the free tour of the Centro de Interpretación’s rooms: the tour takes in both the town and Montaña Sagrada. The provider’s availability may change; confirm it before making plans.
