Hoyos brings together a protected historic ensemble, church art, surviving monastery ruins, and two moderately difficult hiking trails. This places concrete architectural history alongside a choice between two routes with different courses.

Historic Ensemble and Church Art

Hoyos is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) in the “Historic Ensemble” category. The ensemble includes both the traditional mountain architecture of the Sierra and noble and palatial buildings. Small, irregular squares and narrow, rising streets shape the town’s layout. Together, these different building types and the distinctive town structure represent Hoyos’s historic character.

A particular architectural highlight is Calle Obispo Álvarez de Castro, where the largest concentration of noble and palatial buildings in Hoyos can be found. The street is a clear point of reference for this part of the ensemble; the squares and rising streets describe another aspect of the townscape.

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Buen Varón has its own BIC designation as a “Monument.” It has a Baroque high altarpiece. One of its entrance doors is also a rare example of Late Romanesque architecture in Extremadura. The church and the historic ensemble as a whole therefore have different protection categories; within the church, the altarpiece and entrance door are also two distinct architectural points of interest.

Other landmarks are found at named locations in Hoyos and its surroundings. The Cruz de la Nava is a granite cross in Plaza Capilla and dates from the late 16th century. Ermita del Cristo Bendito del Valle stands on the road to Cilleros and is mentioned as early as 1594. These details provide different historical reference points: a dated cross and an early mention of the chapel.

Monastery Ruins and Landscape

Convento del Espíritu Santo was founded by Pablo Pérez, a resident of Hoyos. Ruins of the monastery remain. The church and the foundations of the cloister, with its entrance doors, are still identifiable. The surviving parts are described separately: the ruins include both the church and the remains of the cloister foundations.

Hoyos lies in a fertile valley in the heart of Parque Cultural Sierra de Gata. Pine, chestnut, and oak forests dominate the peaks around the town. The valley location and the forests on the peaks describe different aspects of the area: the valley locates Hoyos, while the named tree species characterize the surrounding uplands.

Hiking Trails and Natural Swimming Pool

The GR 10 E-09 Hoyos-Acebo route is 6 km long, is of moderate difficulty, and leads from Hoyos via Avenida de Extremadura. The SL-CC 211 Camino de Hoyos a Trevejo connects Hoyos and Trevejo, is 7 km long, and is also rated as moderately difficult. Its starting point is at the end of Calle Obispo Álvarez de Castro in Hoyos.

Length, difficulty, and route are useful points of comparison: the SL-CC 211 is one kilometer longer than the GR route, and both are described as moderately difficult. The SL-CC 211 follows medieval, fully public, paved paths between old stone walls and oak groves. Avenida de Extremadura is named as part of the GR 10 E-09 route. The two trails therefore differ for anyone choosing a route not only in length, but also in their described starting points and waypoints. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

Another natural attraction is Piscina Natural de Hoyos. It has a large pool, is located on the Rivera de Acebo, and is fed by the Santa Catalina and Razas streams. As a place to enjoy the water, it differs from the buildings and hiking trails that also contribute to Hoyos’s character.
