At the Riu Foix, the estuary is a natural attraction in its own right, while Castell de Cubelles and Can Travé offer different points of cultural and historical interest. When planning your visit, you can choose between the wetland and a guided tour, architectural and collection-related themes, and local cuisine, rather than trying to fit everything into a single outing.

Riu Foix Estuary: Protected Area and Wetland Habitats

The natural area at the mouth of the Riu Foix in Cubelles is part of the Natura 2000 network and is designated as a ZEPA bird protection area. The wetland covers approximately ten hectares and includes lagoons, reed beds, tamarisk groves and wet meadows.

Guided tours are offered at the estuary, explaining changes to the river, beach and coastal lagoon. Places are limited and booking is required; the programme and availability may vary. If this tour fits your plans, check the dates and book in advance.

Castell de Cubelles and Can Travé

Castell de Cubelles has been documented since 1041 and was built on the remains of an ancient Roman villa. In 1949, it was designated a cultural asset of cultural interest. The permanent exhibition about Charlie Rivel, who was born in Cubelles, displays parts of his costume, awards, performance photographs and other documents.

Can Travé offers a different cultural focus. Frederic Travé established a library specialising in classical mythology, a natural history cabinet and a botanical garden there. The two sites therefore centre on different themes: the history of the Castell and the exhibition about Rivel on the one hand, and the library, natural sciences and garden on the other.

Another historical landmark has been preserved on one of Cubelles’ beaches: an old machine-gun nest from the Spanish Civil War. It adds a military-history aspect to the architectural and collection-related themes.

A Circular Route with Distance Details

The Ruta per la natura. Itinerari 2 is a circular route that starts in Cubelles. It is just over eight kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 160 metres. When choosing your route, you can take two different figures into account: the distance and the elevation difference. This lets you weigh them together rather than looking only at the kilometre count.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Festa Major Petita de Sant Abdó i Sant Senén is a traditional festival held on 30 July in honour of Cubelles’ patron saints. The Festa Major de la Mare de Déu d’Agost features street parades, dancing, human towers, fire runs, concerts and activities for all ages. The exact programme may vary each year. The two festivals have different focuses: one is dedicated to the patron saints, while the other features a wide-ranging programme of events.

Xató is a typical dish of Penedès Marítim, prepared with produce from the garden and the sea. Cubermut adds to this culinary scene: the vermouth and aperitif fair in Cubelles includes tastings, sampling sessions and workshops. The specific dates may vary depending on the event programme; check the dates if you would like to include the fair in your travel plans.
